That what probably most people will think

Like the Panerai 360

EVERYBODY wants one but it gets nasty when some won't get it and become very jalous

I don't care

If I have it = GREAT
If I don't ............ it's a pitty but better luck next time

I like the idea of Rolex issuing limited editions. Not sure why they haven't done so already.

I can't answer the poll as it would depend entirely on whether or not I liked the look of the thing!
I certainly wouldn't want a limited edition just "because it was there!"

The Panama Canal Limited edition and the Octopus Sea-Dweller limited edition are two that quickly come to mind.

You know the funny thing about the Octopus Sea Dweller limited is that my wife and I honeymooned in the Cinque Terra region of Italy when we married last year late October. Anyway, I never heard about this watch or this division of the Italian Police for that matter. We did a day trip to La Spezia and of course being a WIS (honeymoon or no honeymoon) I start asking around for a Rolex AD as soon as I got to town. I ended up in the AD's shop who sold all of these watches. I started talking to the owner as best I could with the language barrier about watches. He showed me the James Bond submariner he was wearing that he bought new when it was released decades earlier. He then showed me that giant submariner history book and flipped to the page with a picture of the octopus sea dweller. At that point is when he told me the story about how Rolex commemorated this piece for this special police unit and all the examples were sold through his store. Again, being a WIS and having the new wife at another shop next door, I do what any American would do- I say "I want it, how much." He said "no, impossible. I don't have" and I said "ah BS. I have AMEX and I want it. Give it quick. We only have a finite number of precious minutes before the wife walks in here and we're done." The owner waived his hands as if to say "no more, they are all gone." I walked out empty handed and it damn near ruined my whole vacation.

I'm glad I found this post because I always wondered about the background of the Octo-Dweller Rolex. Thanks for posting!

Oh yes I forgot about the King Midas. I think I try to block this watch out of my mind. Sort of ugly in my opinion.

Some people just don't know class ... LOL

It is definately a 70's design, but it is kinda cool to wear, and you never have to worry about running into someone wearing your watch.

Oh I know it is a really unique piece. Definitely the 70s vibe. I was born in the 70s but really have no recollection of the fabulous style we were all sporting in that era!

And now there will be a flurry of posts as to whether watch no 1 is better than ( more desired ) than watch 300. In that line of thought I recently attended a lecture on print making. With limited editions the prints are pulled of the press and stacked with the first one on the bottom. They are then numbered with the last pulled off the press being number 1. Thus for those concerned with the quality difference ( if any can truly be discerned ) the last in a series is infinitesimally better than the first numbered.

I am not a fan of limited editions mainly because it causes flipping by people trying to make a buck. They cause more hostility than they are good for, and they take away from the true enjoyment of just owning the watch that you want on your wrist.

I know guys who have purchased watches just because they thought they might appreciate more than the one they truly wanted in the first place, it's just foolish.

Good question, but option two doesn't make sense, the very nature of a limited edition is that many won't be able to get one, and demand will be more than supply. The poll should be just a simple yes or no, ones reason for saying no, may not be because many won't get one. I would love to see a LE Submariner.1 hunnybee.

I think this is a great idea. ROLEX would of course have to see some merit in stalling production of their other watches to put these special editions out, so, driving cost sky-high....In that case, it demands precious metal, deserving the highest possible price and markup.
Ok, lets just skip all the debate and advance the production of Daytona in Full Platinum and be done with it.

Otherwise, Rolex can accomplish the same thing by introducing a tourbillon....

rolex should not start this. why? because they dont need to.

looking at some other watch brands i feel like the only reason why they put out limited editions is because they want to upgrade their image. what they forget is, not only should the limited edition be limited, but also the "numbers of limited editions" should be very limited.

I could not vote - I don't agree with either choice.

My answer is a simple no. We are talking Rolex. Rolex doesn't need to pull stunts like this to boost sales.

No thanks, even 3000 pcs would be like 1 per AD if that and who would get to buy one legit? Let Panerai corner the limited run market. That's all they have.

yea that is a good idea. Rolex should stand up and make limited production for those who wants to have the best.
