Please name all the good things about a rolex watch

Hello,

I'm on the point of purchasing my first rolex (Davidsw is keeping an eye out for me) and I can't wait to be able to join the WRUW threads! I have been looking up a few thing on this forum and I noticed the following:

There are a lot of things that people are not happy about with rolex such as:
- the lume fades very fast
- the bracelet is flimsy
- rolex customer service is not always that good
- the price is very high
- ...

So my question is: what do you think is the best feature of a rolex watch or the rolex brand?

Seriously I can only speak for my 14060m but here goes:

The thing is built like a tank.

I love the look of it more than any other watch.

Rough and tough as it may be it can still cut the mustard in just about any social/business situation.

Most important of all... I wish I was James Bond! More specifically, I wish I was Sean Connerys James Bond in the Terence Young movies.

Hi

It is the identity of the oyster-case that makes it the most popular watch in the world.

All improvements done to it over the years are subtle. From a distance, unmistakably it must be a Rolex. It is just like a Mercedes-Benz with its legendary upright grille. No comment about the new Benz, though.

The Cellini, though still a Rolex, is a dying breed and not worth a second glance.

Well, I don't own one yet, but I have always liked the look of the gmt. I think I will mostly like the versatility of the watch (oyster/jubilee/nato/pepsi/coke/black).

The truth is, I have never worn a rolex gmt in my life . I have seen it in person once and I knew immediately that was the watch I liked the most. I looked up rolex on the internet and found this site and many other sites with a wealth of information and then I started saving money.

My bracelet is awesome (certainly not flimsy), the cost was my choice, customer service at my AD was excellent....

Lume looks amazing in blue! (but does fade a little too fast for my liking)

Another point would be that MOST Rolex are very modest and understated.

A few reasons to start with Rolex:
1. Tough. To me, this is key and a huge differentiator between Rolex and all the other high quality brands. Most made their reps by creating high complications or super sophisticated movements that were clearly meant as dress models. For 50-60 years Rolex has been perfecting sport or dress/sport watches that are tough as nails.
2. For a watch that should last your lifetime, you need service and parts. Rolex can't be beat. Everyone else is a step down.
3. Good looking models.
4. Expensive but affordable.
5. You can buy and sell anytime and anywhere. No other brand has such a solid resale market.

Well the new lume is fantastic on the new Subs, and the new bracelets and clasps are by far the best in it's price range. The new bracelet makes the new models that much more comfortable to wear, the old bracelets and clasps don't compare.

As far as price, the new models are worth every penny, the old are overpriced IMHO. When you put the newest releases against other brands that Rolex competes with, Rolex wins by a mile. I think the old models were way out dated and you can find many other brands that were thousands cheaper that were very comparable in price and quality.

If you are going to buy a new Rolex, don't waste your money on a older model, buy a new Sub C or the new Explorer or Explorer II. This is the only way to get your monies worth.

I also have two local Watchmakers that are Rolex certified with parts accounts that are fantastic, the customer service is wonderful.

I will be buying the rolex gmt 16710. If rolex would release the ceramic model in 2012 I might flip the 16710 for it but we will see then.

When you would pick up an older style rolex; what is your first feeling then? Quality or rubbish?

Rolex would not be where it's at as a world leader in the Luxury Watch market if they made rubbish.

The 16710 is a good choice and set the world stage for a dual-time wristwatch.. Test pilots like Chuck Yeager and NASA Astronauts like Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong chose this watch as their personal time-piece...

They wouldn't be trusting their careers on junk....

The GMT II Ceramic has been out for about three years. Check out the Rolex web site or visit an authorized dealer.

An older model has the same quality as the newer ones. I certainly would not use the term "rubbish" to describe any Rolex. Especially on this forum.
