Hi, I'm new to the forum, don't have a Rolex but convinced myself of getting a GMT-Master II.
I want to get it to reward myself for professional success, and since I have two science degrees and no graduation ring, I thought it'd be nice to engrave it with my name, and degree dates.

After reading a lot on this forum, I'm wary of internet dealers, so my intention is to buy it from an AD.

Questions:
Will the AD be able to do a neat engraving? (as in does he have the machines?)
Will the watch lose value cause is engraved?

Yes, 100%... you end up with a 6000 dollar paper weight.

Welcome to the forum.

Most AD's wouldn't have an inhouse engraver so you would have to ask them.
They will send it out to be done so you're probably better of finding your own engraver and have the ability to discuss with him and also wiev samples of fonts and styling.

No it won't lose any value and if you later on decide to sell it you can always have it polished out or simply buy a new case back.

I suggest you buy one from the trusted sellers here and then have it engraved. Save yourself a 1,000-2,000 dollars and then you can use that money you saved to pay for the new caseback and engraving!

I wouldn't engrave any of my watches to be honest. It's never been something I would do. Because you will always remember the significant things in life.

Welcome.

The only people who can advise on the craftsmanship of your local dealer are those who have had their watches engraved by them.

As far as the value is concerned, keeping the engraving shallow will ensure that it's easy to remove in the future.

I'd not bother, personally. You know what you've achieved and don't need to keep removing your watch and gazing at the caseback to remind you.

I would keep it stock. Engraving personalizes the watch for the owner, but if he/she ever wanted to sell it, it would be too customized for the new buyer!

What if you were to puchase a oem caseback and have it engraved? You could keep the original one in the box. I was also considering having my 16610LV engraved. I wanted purchase another caseback. I have not really looked into this yet though.

Well, thanks again for your answers.
I bought it, engraved it and wear it every day! (gmt master2).
I also ended up paying MSRP...

I visited an AD today, (now I want a date just 2, 41 mm fluted) cause just one rolex is not enough... :)

They told me, we can't discount a single dollar cause rolex wont let us, after I told them I wanted the one with the silver face, which they didnt have, they offered 5% discount on the blue face one... WTF?

In your experience, how far could I push for a discount?

Rolex allows 15%. Period. Thats not to say they want dealers to discount at all, its just thats what they can come down and not get in trouble. Always be sure to look into multiple ADs, if you can, and cross shop them. Never pay full price. Or as many others have said, buy from Trusted Sellers on here (research a little to discover who they are). They all sell pre-cherished Rolex' for quite a bit less than new.

Please do not make blanket statements about things you have no knowledge of. What may apply (or what you think may apply) in your region may not apply to the rest of the planet. Dear 77T, like I said, I bought the GMT master 2 and had it engraved, two years ago... so the advice wansn't ignored...
And today I got the datejust 2, rhodium fluted bezel arabic numeral at an AD.
They discounted the taxes (8.25%) and also gave me a 10% gift card, plus 4 years warranty.
I hope it was a good deal... anyway I'm happy with my new watch... oh!, they also are polishing the bracelet on the GMT to make it look like new!

Since a rolex watch is a very personal thing, and may be owned by you for years to come, and maybe passed down as you get older, I say engrave it. You are the one wearing it, and it means a lot to you. Enjoy
