First Rolex: Milgauss GV or DJ II
Hello All!
Pardon me, my first post and I start off with a question... I am very fortunate enough to be gifted a Rolex by my fi! I am looking at the Milgauss GV and a DJ II Black Dial. I've tried both of them in person and I love both! Now I am torn between which one to get. (NO, I can't get both! ) The thing is, I am not looking at the Subs because 1. I know I will want one if I wore one, and 2. I have a Tag Aquaracer, a similar "diving" watch. So, basically between GV and DJ II. I know I should get a watch I love but the thing is I love both! Which would be a better choice as a first (and most likely my last) Rolex? I want to wear this to the coffin. Thanks in advance, |

Welcome to the forum..!
As for your question, my preference would be the DJ II. Although the Milgauss is a great pick also!! Having said all that, once you get either, you'll really want a Sub!! Best of luck in your choices and enjoy the boards!

I love the Millie GV. I own a Millie GV.
Having said that I think the DJ would probably be the more appropriate first Rolex of the two. Nels |

Neither will be your last! I own a milgauss (black dial, not gv) and thinking about possibly picking up a dj II. I guess the main thing will be do you need a date? If not, go milgauss, if yes, go dj II. Simple enough right

I'd pick the WG/SS DJ II. It has a date, and if you buy it with a white or black dial, it's more versatile either.
But I'd get the blue DJ II for myself, on the basis that it's just sooooo beautiful [not my picture I'm afraid] |

DJ2 for me. I don't care for green glass on a watch.

Thanks for the welcome.
Ok you guys aren't helping at all! Lol My thought is that I get a GV now and if ever I could pick up a used DJ II later on, wouldn't this be a better route than the other way around? also the AD I talked to says that there can be a deal for the DJ II but in the GV she cannot go a penny under the MSRP. Is there a merit on this? |

The GV model is a special Milgauss. Some consider it a limited edition, although it's actually not one. On the other hand, the DJ II has some (WG/SS) or more (TT) precious metal content, and Rolex ADs tend to do deals on precious metal watches.

I see. It's that a used DJ II seems to go much less than a used GV.
See how greedy I am? I am already thinking about a second Rolex... |

My heart goes for datejust, classic, flashy, and milgauss will never get my vote.
Anyway I personally think the anti magnetic function is as useless as the 1220m water resistant come on, you won't place your holy rolexes on the TV or magnetic any kinds. We have our own place for our rolexes don't we ? Not on the microwave of course. And for the datejust, there is the function that you can make full use of it, the " opp, look at him " function So unless you are a scientist who work in a magnetic field, or you like the green surface , then I say get the datejust |

I was in your shoes six months ago. I went with the Milgauss and have never regretted it. There are many nice DJs, but I would have always pined for the Milgauss.
I agree with your idea that you can pick up a used DJ later for less money. They seem to sell used at a much higher discount. As for no discount on the GV, that surprises me a bit. I got the black face non-GV, however the few ADs I checked out were also willing to discount the GV too. If you go for the Milgauss then I'd push a little harder for the discount. |

I vote for DJ II. It has a date and the "I'm wearing a Rolex" factor :).
If you want to be subtle, the GV will be the choice. But IMHO, it doesn't have same recognition factor as the other classic Rolex watches like Sub, GMT, DJ, or DD. |

Neither watch is an "iconic" Rolex...not that there is anything wrong with that. You haven't really said what appeals to you about each watch. You make some reference to used prices...and better deal at the AD but thats about it.
Coin toss perhaps? |

DJ II looks just elegant on a wrist. I loved the WG bezel there is something so special about it. I just tossed a coin. It landed on it's side and it's rolling away from me........ |

DJII with white or ivory dial with stick. Plus, it is much more versatile than the GV any day.

Welcome to the forum.
I don't think you'll stop with one Rolex...! DJ II would be my choice also....but I agree...you'll always want a sub. I wouldn't resist that urge simply because you have something you consider similar. Good luck!!

I have a 16613 TT Sub and have recently purchased a Milguass GV. It is a stunning watch with a nice feel on my wrist. However, I do glance at the dial once in a while looking for the cyclops date! The Datejust definitely has the advantage here. I considered purchasing a Datejust as my second Rolex, but the GV won me over. No other Rolex has this special look, IMO.
I tried to deal with the Vancouver AD's, but they are treating the GV as some sort of rare collectors' Rolex and wanted full pop if they would even stoop to sell it to me (one AD had put their GV in their safe in anticipation of elevated pricing). Hopefully, in T.O. you don't get the same treatment from your ADs'. I solved by GV purchase by buying a BNIB GV from a trusted gray seller on the site (DAVIDSW - highly recommended) and saved hugh $$$ to boot. If the date is a requirement, buy the DD II - if not grab a GV. you won't be sorry!! J. Alan |
