What do you think of this 1680 white Sub?
http://cgi.ebay.com/1977-ROLEX-SUBMA...item1c1d1227bd
Looks like it's in pretty good condition, but does the pearl look oddly recessed, do the hands look like replacements (esp. in the 9th pic), and is the bezel a replacement (skinny fonts)? Other than that I like the lighter eggshell patina on the dial, and the case/lugs look good to my inexperienced eyes... Thanks in advance for the help! |

The pearl is missing from the bezel. Pretty come for them to chip off or fall out. My dad has a sub with it missing.
The hands look to match to me. As for the bezel I can't tell for sure but I'm sure one of the experts can help you. |

The insert is indeed a newer service replacement. Not a huge deal, you could always find a period correct fatter one. Don't jump on me for this, but something about the watch doesn't rub me the right way. Something seems off but I can't place my mind on it I'm probably hallucinating, because otherwise it looks fine! Case has some good life left to it

I know what you're saying...It does look "different" ..... I'm use to seeing the 1680 dial with the "L" in Rolex to the left of the crown and with open 6's in the depth rating....
I've seen a number of 1680s with this dial and they have proven to be legit..... Although the date wheel is a Rolex replacement...the original one should be silver..... Hope that helps a bit..... |

Clay! I would also say that the seller has a lot of positive feedbacks on small ticket items.. nothing I see yet on a 4-5K item. I would think about how good they are in terms of a high ticket item.. making sure its all original and if something does go wrong, that they are willing to offer a full refund with certain inspection period. Best, Fred |

Has nice patina, nice 93150, pearl missing, case has been polished at least 2 time, hands maybe a early replacement, overall though, looks solid!!!

I agree that there is a pearl in the hole but it doesn't appear like a normal pearl. It looks like it might have broke off and what we are seeing is what is left of the pearl.

It might just be the way the pictures were taken, but maybe whats throwing me off are: the bezel, the crystal, and the way the hands look golden in the 3rd pic from the end. I give up, I personally would find another example, but thats just me...

Great feedback, thanks everyone!
Agree that the pearl looks recessed; not missing, like the top was just chipped off or something. Anyway, I asked the seller for some additional details on the watch (there aren't many in the listing), will let everyone know what they say... |

I received a response from the seller this morning, here's my question and their response below:
Q: Hello, I was wondering if the bezel pearl is chipped off or completely missing? Also, do you have any maintenance/service records? When the watch was last pressure tested, gaskets checked, etc. Also, how is it running? Does the movement feel smooth when the time/date is manually changed? Thank you! A: Hello, it looks like someone attempted to replace it. It is there and it looks good in person, but not sure what exactly happened there. Judging by the mark on the inside of the case back it looks like last time it was serviced in 2004. It runs very good, and the movement feels VERY smooth when the time/date is manually changed. It keeps good time! Thank you! Even they're unsure about the pearl, but it looks like it may have been serviced in '04. I asked for photos of the inside of the case back and internal movement. Will keep everyone posted... |
