Mayors discount 11619LB WG Sub

This is crazy. Been looking at these watch forums for like a week.

My dad bought me a SS Sub back in 1986 for my 21st birthday. A few years later living at home and working, doing ok---bought myself a TT blue Sub. My SS Sub that was a birthday present was like around 1100 to 1300 dollars (like 25 years ago). My TT Sub that I bought myself was like 3300 or 3500 with tax, from what I remember. Got married early 90's and before I married the wife, bought her a TT ladies SS and gold Sub like looking links ladies watch for like 2100 or 2200 (best I can recall)

Well to make a long story slightly shorter.....I was very proud of my TT Blue Sub that I bought, and since I now had two rolexes ---well I gave the SS Sub to my dad to wear---(hell, I figured he bought it for me and I owed him WAY, WAY more than that for helping me in life...giving me life...and a billion other things).

Dad passed away a year and a half ago. Last number of year I had been wearing an $ 18 Casio---super cheepie----and once in a blue moon would wear the TT blue sub for a dressy occasion. But recently my 18 year old daughter asked me if she could wear the SS Sub as she knew I didn't wear it. I said ok, and on a recent business selling trip that I went on, and that I took her with me....I wore my TT blue sub on my sales calls like I used to back in late 80's and through the 90's.

Honestly her SS Sub looked better than my TT sub, as I had the SS Sub serviced and my TT Blue one had a faded dial and corrosion on the hands, as I never serviced the watch in over 20 years (still kept good time)....must have been some moisture that got into the watch. I was now jealous of my daughters watch.

I went out to Mayors a AD here in Florida, with a lot of stores in the area. Picked up a DSSD. I thought about getting a new dial and hands for the TT blue Sub, but thought it still looked kinda good and didn't want to spend between 1000-1500 on the watch. I paid reg retail for the DSSD 10,650 before tax.

I am very happy with my new DSSD. I love the fact that my daughter is wearing my SS sub. I don't need the cash out of my TT blue Sub, and it would need some money put into it.

Now, finally my problem is that I can't get the WG sub out of my mind. I was told I could get a 12% discount on the watch from Mayors, but I didn't push as I don't know how serious I am (wife might kill me if I bought it), but this is now when gold is $1750 an ounce, and the watch is beautiful, and heavy, about I would say same as my DSSD give or take a small amount.

Retail is 34,000 (crazy right ??). With 12% discount 29,920 before tax. What do you think I could really get the watch from my AD for 26,000 ??? Lower ???

Also if I were ever to sell it.....(i know this is crazy to ask)...BUT.....if I needed to sell the watch within a month...what is the minimum I could get out of it. I realize I would be buying retail, and selling wholesale....a crazy expensive watch that not many people have the money for.

Is there a good chance of getting mugged with the WG sub.

Thanks,

Dan

PS.....looking for any and all opinions..my first post

I wouldn't buy the WG Sub at least not from where you mentioned...

I have a WG Sub myself and got it from one of the trusted sellers on this website. It is a great watch, the WG is quite heavy.

Knowing what I do now I would have got the SS Ceramic Sub. That is a great watch. Some have it with a blue bezel insert and I think that looks very cool.

You could also wait a couple of months for the new ExplorerII to be released, you will love that watch...

It's interesting your daughter (18y.o.) wears the Sub....I thought young adults these days were not into watches....but I guess they are into brands and 'Rolex' is one of the best.

Whadda-ya-mean Steve? Is it too heavy, or too easy to scratch, or just cheaper to get the SS with blue bezel?

It's a great look, the only way I like the 'new' Rolex blue.

I actually like yours better Steve, much like people prefer the 16610LV to the 116610 LV, because the colored bezel and dial are too much, I feel a blue bezel and blk dial work better than blue for both. It's cool to think of a solid white gold Sub that's semi stealthy since most won't realize it's gold, but for 25k, no thanks, I'd much rather get myself a lnib Patek Aquanaut plus a Panerai or Sea Dweller. :)

It seems more women are wearing mens watches now.

When my daughter told me she liked having a "piece" of me with her I just ate it up.

Just thinking to myself that the WG sub is a bit heavier than my DSSD...

Thinking about it....., but am I that crazy for me ???

You can get a brand-new one on here with your name on the warranty card for about $16k, I wouldn't buy anywhere else. I have personally dealt with Mosco and justrolexes, but there are several more who do lots of business in the for-sale section with great reviews.

EDIT: Sorry, that price was for the Meteorite Daytona, which I have been tracking, but there is a Sub available for $22.5k. You can probably do better than that, especially for pre-loved.

The WG Sub is a magnificient piece -- as long as you are okay with its weight and the drawbacks of the gold (prone to scratching).

As others suggested, I too would get the SS Sub-C over the WG Sub. But if you want a WG Sub and nothing else, then avoid the ADs, and use our trusted seller DavidSW, especially since AFAIK he too lives in FL.

Hi

Hi , I love your story its similar to mine , bought my first Sub in 93 on my Birthday I come home and found my wife had changed it to a TT IN 95 ,went to the store asked for the SS back paid for it gave it to my Father he still wears it today and just bought him a new Bracelet 93250 replacing the older 93150 that was worn. it has had one service since 93.

My TT is on my sons wrist now and battered as he wears it everywhere.

I purchased a 116619lb last year and wear it now and then it is heavy and not very practical but ,I just bought another from my ad brand new for £14000 and received a free service from RSC on my SS Daytona so that was worth about £500 so cost £13,500 brand new V series .

I hope I dont regret buying it as my youngest is watch mad at 17 he has bought a 116718 ceramic 18k GMT with some inheritance money and I just gave him my first 116619lb and for his birthday he has bought the HULK all kept in Rolex winders in the safe ready to wear. His Favourite beater is his Grandads TT dj circa 1988 given to him a couple off years ago before we lost him last Oct to a sudden illness .

My father in law had a Sub date my youngest wanted but it went to my Brother in Law.

My advice would be get a ceramic sub also more practical and sure if you had to sell it you would get most your $ back ..

I would wait though if you have the Deepsea and get the new Explorer 216570 it looks special with white or black dials

As mentioned you could probably get a better deal if you purchase one here from a trusted seller.

Re-sell value on any all precious metal watch is not that good. You'll do much better if you buy it pre-loved as the first owner will take the majority of the hit.

Do some researchand you'll see what I mean.

WG Sub, should be able to get about 25% off new at AD. Get from trusted TRF seller if you can't find that at AD. Just my .02.

Your SS Submariner is from 86', so it's a 16800 or 168000? One question..... Can I wear your SS Sub? :D

I know from experience that mayors will not budge on the discounts. They are a company policy on discounts, I've seen the actual documents. It goes.

0% for SS models
8% for TT models
12% for solid gold models

That's all you will get.

Scooba,

That was a cool story. I guess the crazy part of getting the 116619LB is that I don't think I would ever sell it. And compared to buying another car......well I have too many cars.

Kareem,

I think you are right about the discounts. I didn't get anything off on the Deepsea (if I was smart for me I would leave it at that)

And the nice young lady ( younger than I)...told me 12% off on the WG sub. I didn't come back and counter offer 25% off.

I was un US back in march.. walked into a Mayor in FL and tried a YG DD. I looked at the price tag and the SA said 23% off right upfront:)
Im a young dude in t shirt and shorts with my Panerai on. But hell I wasnt even thinking of buying. Too bad US dont do tax free shopping like other countries.

I agree with this. I have seen several AD's that are offering 10%+ on DSSD's. I'm sure that many AD's will give a pretty big discount on the WG Sub. I love that watch. I think I would rather have that than a YG DDII.

I love my blue smurf. In honesty, I like my TT C (blue) just as much. I dont feel regeret for buying it last year , but dont wear it as much as I thought I would. Both TT C s of mine get plenty of wear...

Great looking mod Steve....Black/blue looks sharp.

The WG sub is a beautiful piece...but the blue dial didn't really work for me when I tried it on.

I have to say I do like WG....The weight and overall feel is something special for the wearer.

I'd like to see the current SS submariner as is in white gold with more dial variations than just the blue...as with the Daytona WG.

Perhaps bring back the red sub dial for WG models? Never happen but it would draw me to the watch.

Well, still thinking of the WG Sub......

Mayors won't budge off the price.....something like 31,600 or so that includes tax. They said they would throw in a watch winder. Probably something also about Rolex getting upset about unauthorized discounts. That might be a lot of yadda, yadda or not.

If I got the watch I guess I would switch off with my DSSD.

Really just concerned that while I know it's important how good of a deal you buy it for-----but if I got it for about 31,600 or so out the door----

Any idea what I might reasonably be able to sell it for say in a year or so. Not that I would mind you, but it's nice to know the financial downside ahead of time. The money that I would use to replenish my funds from this purchase is in a 2yr CD earning a whopping 1.35%. The new rates would probably be only like .6%. And for that return on investment thinking that it's not that crazy to blow like 8,000----buy 31,600 and one year later........24,000 or maybe less.

It is a beautiful piece, and rather nice.

Note: It looks that a lot of folks here in Florida trade in Rolexes, and I have seen Hulk's, and a DSSD, like what I have, and a black face--green bezel.....BUT I have not come across a jeweler with a used 116619LB.

I should stop thinking about it and be happy with my DSSD.

Rolex should sponsor these forums !

look at the for-sale section and you can see what pre-owned prices are like for a 116619LB. once you walk out the AD door, it becomes a pre-owned.

if you are looking at investment, then forget watches. your money would do better in the bank (low % but guaranteed) or gold deposits (higher % but could drop or jump).

You should be able to pick one up for 24-26K or so. Wadeb has or had one in his shop used for quite some time. Send him a pm. Your money do want you want but for 31K you will take a major bath on it for resale...contact bodybump, davidsw or justrolexes and save yourself THOUSANDS

My Local AD will part with one at a 30% discount. But this is the final week that he could do this...then the discounts end.
