Is rolex leading and omega following?or vice versa?

Did omega start producing their Seamasters in ceramic after the Rolex released their ceramic submariners? or is it the opposite?

Rolex were the first to implement ceramics on the bezels of their watches, but I would argue that Omega is leading the way with movements right now

I agree. Both are awesome though. I started buying Omega as of late. Buying Panerai hand wound too. I think the old school PAM rock. Omega and PAM got me into the handwind world. Love it.

I can't believe how cheap the old Omegas are?!?! Crazy...

Ceramic is not something new in watches some brands have been making them since the 1960s.But today Ceramic seems to be the latest fashion so many brands are now jumping on the ceramic bandwagon.

RADO pioneered the ceramic technology in the watch industry and is owned by Swatch Group.

Omega is also owned by Swatch Group... So you do the maths

I'd say the only thing progressing with Rolex are their prices. Totally getting out of control. When the Omega ceramic is available with the 8500 movement you can bet your bottom dollar I will be aquiring one of them, especially at half the price (after discount) than the Rolexes.

Its already out, I tried one on a couple of weeks ago, but you're not going to get half price.

The answer is quite simple, buy second hand; every Rolex can be bought that way, no price increases, no waiting lists and no hassle.

Actually the prices of pre-owned Rolexes are also increasing all the time.

Half the price (after discount) than the Rolexes? I don't think so.

Great stuff. You can probably bet your bottom dollar that the re-sale value of the said Ceramic PO with 8500 will not be as good as say.... A Rolex. Even after discount.

Maybe following consumer wants, but design wise Rolex leads. Other bands have Sub'ish, DD'ish, DJ'ish watches. Rolex has set the standard to copy and follow. They have adjusted their styles a bit, but that is not following another brand per se.

I agree with this.

The sub, the DD and the DJ are old designs. Updating them with minor tweaks and size increases can hardly be thought of as leading.

For what it is worth I tried on a new PO last weekend, and I honestly much preferred it to the Sub C. Yes, I know it is not a Rolex, and I realize it will not hold it's value as well as a Rolex, but it is one hell of a nice watch with impeccable finishing, a real wrist presence, and a cutting edge movement.

Rolex makes nice classically styled watches, but with the new offerings Omega truely leads in my book.

I think some of you guys need to realise that rolex is not the be all and end all of the watch world. There are many far superior brands available in respect to quality, build , movement etc...

All of the newer bigger cased rolexs look absolutely horrible. the super cased lugs/the awful bezels on the dd2s and dj2s the short hands on the explorer .

I love my sub, daytona and day date so not hating . but rolex are definately becomming one of the followers

My dad says Rolex back in 1963 is 350 pesos and Omega 300 pesos. And he says that has been the trend. My uncle, dad's brother, was given a Rolex as a gift from her mom for being the only Filipino that year to be chosen by the Philippine Government to go to West Point.

I applaud Omega for their technological efforts but they have a lot to work out before they are Rolex.

Me and a very good friend had a streak of bad luck with Omega and their servicing within the last two years -- part of what drew me to Rolex a couple years ago. Between the two of us we have had 3 watches come back worse off than when we sent them for servicing. His White GMT was badly damaged with tons of scratches after servicing. He refuses to buy another Omega. I had a Seamaster that they just couldn't get right and always stopped. Finally got it working with a private watchmaker and sold it off at a considerable loss (and with full disclosure to the buyer) because it gave me so much headache.

It took a lot to justify a 3750.50 -- a watch i've always wanted -- but I did so based on the fact I can service the 1860 easily elsewhere and keep the watch unpolished to boot.

I don't understand how they can increase prices to Rolex standards when their QC is seriously lacking. Sometimes I wonder if the bit-off more than they can chew with the Co-Axial?

Rolex will always win for me personally. However on the technical aspects of the watch, Omega may be winning..
