16800 - a question for the experts on TRF
Hi all, I have been offered a 16800 through the pre-owned side of my normal AD. The 16800 was registered in mid 1981 and has a 65nnnnn serial. It has original box, sleeve and papers and was Rolex serviced earlier this year. On close examination I noted the following:
- Dial is a matt slate grey colour as opposed to matt black. The colour is quite similar to that of a Milgauss GV or the new Explorer and is far lighter than my 16610 Sub Date. - Hour markers look original (have not faded yet to yellow) and are very lightly pitted on a couple of the markers. - Case does not seem to have been heavily polished in the past (clean edges - not too rounded) - Bezel insert and pearl look quite new. - Hour and Minute hands look very new. Second hand is very lightly pitted - Bracelet is a 93150 with 501B end clasps Looking on various reference sites, it looks like the 93150 with a 501B end clasp may be a later addition for the 16800. Most sites quote a 593 End Clasp for early 16800s. Should I be concerned about either the face colour or the 501B end clasp? Should I take comfort from the fact that it has been Rolex serviced and therefore verified to some degree. Does it sound like it has been too "modernised" by the end clasp, pearl, bezel insert etc. Many thanks in advance for any advice. This is my first step into "vintage" territory. |
