Proper marketing :)

In all honesty though, it's the market segment that it targets.

You ask me if it's expensive I'd say HELL NO... if you asked me if a PATEK is expensive I'd say HELL YES... everbody has their own opinion, that's why people have different watches on their wrists.

time will tell, but when you produce something as "limited" & "collectable" from the beginning, it often adds up to a lot of BS.

Most of the future/potential value is going to the manufacturer at the initial purchase price. I think this will eventually make folks shy away.

many of their watches carry a price double that of the base model for a very slight alteration in minutia of the dial... while the alteration may be very desirable it equates to pennies, yet it often commands a ~$5K up-charge.

imho this just cannot last as a marketing technique, it is not authentic.

the company has made big changes recently, so lets see what happens.

i have a 210 and its fantastic but i won't buy into any of the limited this or that right off the production line...

so a question i would have, (not to hijack the thread) would the general consensus be, do you think 16610LV (for example) is in the same ballpark as a panerai limited anything?

If you are buying the watch as some type of investment than you are going to be disappointed IMO. Buy it cause you like it, can afford it and it will make you happy. If you sell it in the future and it is worth anything at all then you did alright in my book

i agree with you, im not buying a watch for future sale, my concern is that when a watch is being marketed as a collectable and limited model, aren't panerai appealing to the market that thinks they are buying an investment?

Comparing Panerai to Rolex doesn't make any sense. Two different watches. Two different business models. Regarding the LE's; I hope they are careful with those releases going forward. Flooding the market with what should be "special" watches won't do any good.

LV being a rare example by rolex that borders on collectable, (certainly there was a bunch of them made) it celebrates a specific model with rich history that has under gone a significant change after many years of changing very little.
vs
a panerai (who also has a rich history for its company and a few of its models) but is releasing LE like they are going out of style

(which is the point to my initial post, it seems like a money grab) and then releasing on some occasions more pieces of an expired LE production run, this practice leaves me feeling like they are taking advantage....... and why i do not believe the hype will last.

Don t think so,LV was never LE it s just a very short pruduction run in terms of Rolex,i estimate 100%ROI in 5years time.yes i have one,but not for sale:-)
