Icon14 Testing Camera and Photobucket

Finally took some time and learned about photobucket this morning, and sat down to read the D5100 instruction manual. I still have a long way to go, but figured I'd take some pics of a new addition before I toss it to the safe. Still having a hard time getting a full frontal image of the dial, but I will be back to the manual soon enough to figure it out. Happy New Years everyone!

Watches or stickers??

I recently started using photobucket, too.....much easier than uploading eh!! The Nikonians website (that Grady suggested) is nice for reading and asking questions about technique, for those of us who shoot Nikon, as is fredmiranda (see FM Forums), for Nikon users and everyone else, as well. Even Ken Rockwell's site may have some useful info.

Nice pics, by the way. Absent the use of photoshop, paying close attention to the lighting will make all the difference, as will your thoughtful use of higher f stops as has been suggested by Jim, and as Padi said, it's ultimately you, not the camera, so be creative, and don't hesitate to try new ways and types of lighting, setup, and camera settings. You never know when the end result will really pop unless you take the shot! Have fun, shot away, and post your pictures often!

Happy Hew Year, Daniel.......

It's a good start - not everyone can be Jocke in the post production

Get to know macro and wide-angle lenses with minimum apertures of f/64 and you'll get that nice depth of field that many like to see in close-up work.

The camera helps a bit, but no matter the price paid for any camera/lens, its down to the person that composes the picture and presses the shutter.

Daniel, if you want nice sharpness of the whole thing, shoot in aperture-priority (Av mode on Canon, forget on Nikon) and start with f:11. The resultant shutter speed will be slower so a tripod is really a must. If photo on screen is too dark, spin the dial to the plus side and go again (sutter speed will get even slower - combat with higher ISO setting to point of image degradation.) Don't mean to confuse you. Experience is everything. Good news is now the film is free!

Good luck. Hope you don't mind the advice... -Jim

All that studying paid off nicely.

I'm guessing that learning to use Photobucket was your New Years resolution.

As a photographer I would say that you have done a pretty good job but like a previous reply said if you want it sharp across the frame then you need to up the aperture to say f11+ but then this will result in a slow shutter speed so in-turn the ISO will have to be increased or a tripod used.
As there is a lot of light colours in the picture then this has caused the camera to underexpose a bit so a +2/3stop would help, but again this would lower the shutter speed and so on....
Photography is mostly about 4 simple rules -
Aperture
Shutter speed
ISO
Focal length
Once you understand how all these work together then it becomes a pleasure to take a picture..
If you need any photography advice please just ask (as long as its not theory based!!)
