Help me choose my next Omega
Hi guys,
I am currently contemplating my next purchase. Having purchased my Rolex GMTIIc TT a month ago, I have been wearing that watch five days a week for the whole past month and I have realized that its looks too flashy and stupid on a pair of jeans or hoodies. Im thinking of keeping that watch for dressier occasions and getting an Omega Seamaster for casual everyday wear. I have previously owned an Omega SMP 300 quartz 'bond' and sold that because I couldnt stand the fact that it was quartz. I also owned an Omega PO 2500 42mm in black, and sold that because it looked too plain. Now I want something that looks sporty. My choice is between: - PO 8500 Black w/orange markers 42mm Uploaded with ImageShack.us Pros:- 8500 movement, ceramic bezel looks superb Cons:- is it worth the extra $$$?? - PO 2500 Orange 42mm Uploaded with ImageShack.us Pros:- Sleek, lightest weight Cons:- Possible issues with 2500 movement, looks outdated? - PO Chrono Orange *Used* Uploaded with ImageShack.us Pros:- Nice chunk of Omega steel, attractive Cons:- looks big on my 6.75" wrist? - SMP Chrono blue Uploaded with ImageShack.us Pros:- The most recognizable Omega, nice colour Cons:- Might become discontinued in a few months time, outdated |

Either blue or black would be perfect indeed (my black SMP quartz fits my jeans very well). Otherwise I voted PO with black bezel.

PO 42mm Orange - I didn't get this one because it looked too sporty for me! Try the 45mm size. I have a 45mm on a 7" wrist and it looks superb!
Omega had issues with the early 2500A & B movements but they are up to the 2500D in this model and I'm not aware of any issues with the 'D' variant. Like anything that is mass produced there are always going to be a few bad eggs in the basket: you just have to hope that there are a lot eggs and you don't get one!! Good luck with your decision. |

Back in May of 2010, these two arrived at the same time:
Ultimately the Planet Ocean won out. I voted for the orange 2500 PO but I prefer it with the black bezel. That would have been my choice had I not had the opportunity to pick up the Liquidmetal LE. Fr. John† |

Of those I would probably go with the PO Chrono Orange. There's just something about that orange bezel.

My vote also. Such an amazing piece! I do love odd watches and some people don't go for orange. The black variant with some orange bits is also stunning!

Not sure if I'd quite call the 2500 outdated (maybe I'm biased b/c I'm trying to buy one now.) Indeed the 8500 is a nice step up, especially with the display back case, and the liquid metal or ceramic bezel. But the price difference is quite high for something that aesthetically is very similar. The main noticeable difference for the casual observer is "Seamaster" in orange. Other than that, it's hard to tell without knowing that one is $1000+ more than the other.
So my preference in terms of value is for the 2500 but with a black bezel and orange numerals. If money were no object, then the new 8500 PO. |

I just went with the 8500
But in the 45.5mm size. I think the ceramic bezel is sooooo much nicer than the previous version. The finish is also nicer all around, too. And I am coming from a 42mm PO. The difference is quite apparent when you look closely at the dial. The applied numerals are nicer, the date wheel and the movement.
I did like the old case back, but I like to see movements, too. If you can afford the price difference, get the new one. That's my vote. Rob |

IMO the orange color are for the seiko orange monster only :P, it would get me bored after awhile. Not to mention the lugs of of the PO :S. I would go for the SMP blue because of the waves and because it will be discontinued. I wear mine everywhere and all the time, not bored of the watch yet :)
