Five minutes fast!

Hi all,

My DSSD was 5 minute fast this morning!

I left it crystal up at about 6 pm last night, then put it back on at about 10 am this morning. After an hour I realised it was 5 minutes 15 seconds fast.

I have adjusted it and it seems to be fine now, but I am quite concerned.

Any thoughts?

Set the time and try it again over night...

Possibly check it out each day for a few days and if you get the same results take it to your AD for a regulation. I had my watch regulated and it now has lost 17 seconds in 49 days!!!

Only an RSC can open and regulate a DSSD. AD's do not have the necessary equipment to pressure test the DSSD after the case has been opened. I am not even sure that an AD has the equipment to open the case of a DSSD.

True, but they cannot open up the DSSD. Rolex only lets RSC open up the DSSD. The AD's cannot pressure test that watch to its capacity.

Yes don't worry I will be doing some tests!

It's just weird -I mean yes ok if it was 5 mins slow then fine it might be in need of a wind (however since it's worn all day every day I doubt this), I just can't think why the hell it would be 5 mins fast?

It's in warranty, but still...... hopefully no serious issues.

I would give it 40 winds, set it to a realible time source, and watch it for the next week and determine what the average is.

That sinking feeling you had in your stomach when you noticed it was 5 minutes fast will not go away completely unless you get it looked at by an AD. 5 minutes is a huge increase - if it does sort itself out after you set it to a reliable source and wind it, great, if not, get it checked out. There should be no reason for you to worry that it might happen again, I would hate that feeling. Did you recently travel? Go through a metal detector? May be magnetized. Let us know how it turns out!

It happened to my Omega a couple years ago: 15 sec a day then several minutes. Very frustrating for a WIS. I stopped wearing it because I just had it serviced. Eventually got it serviced, and it has been running within specs.

Glad to hear! I've been keeping track of both my watches for the last month for fun, since I got the 116400GV.

No it's had nothing happen to it which might have caused it - no metal detectors, drops, bangs or anything. It's looked after really well.

I have given it 40 winds and synced it to my G-Shock radio controlled watch, so let's see shall we.

Oddly, it does seem to be a bit louder now as well than before, although I can't say I have listened to it at all since the day I got it so can't be sure on that. Or I am now inventing phantom issues due to worrying about it?

Any quartz watch will do for any accuracy check over 5 days as long as thats the setting watch both are synchronised too.

well luckily I have a quartz G-Shock which is used for when I have to do work which may result in nice watches being scratched or broken!

UPDATE: well after winding it and setting it, as of this morning it was +2seconds
As of lunchtime it was +3 seconds, and right now it is +3 seconds.

I also left it overnight crown down as per the rolex advice to loose a few seconds.

Not sure what to do: reset the time and see what it does over the next 24hrs, or keep it as it is and then see the overall loss over the week?

Let it run, you need not re-set the time every day...just keep a log of what it is gaining and losing for 4-5 days and report back.

Actually It would be best to let it run the full week without further manipulation. Then determine what the difference at the end of the week between the two watches, and then divide by 7 to determine what the average is.

Edit - Sorry I misread your post the first time John.

It's likely that there is nothing wrong with your watch..

Noticing that your watch is "off" at some point, then resetting it is not a valid test, nor does it give anybody a basline. How do you know that the last time you set it, you didn't use a source that was off to begin with??..

Well I always set it to the same G-Shock radio-controlled watch (only quartz I have) and it was five minutes off that.

But the main issue was it was on time at night then seriously off time in the morning - gaining five mins overnight. It wasn't five minute fast when I took it off.

But I think setting it to one quartz watch will give a baseline yes.

Sometimes in a rush, when I'm setting my watch, I'll set it wrong and think it's fast/slow later.

Good point. You are not alone in this regard; I'm sure that many of us are guilty of the same. For this reason, I agree that the OP should not assume the worst but should do what he has already done; namely, start with an accurate and careful time setting and then just monitor to determine if there truly is a regulation issue.

I've been in a hurry and set my watch five minutes fast or slow.

Stuff happens.

UPDATE: OK well this morning it's at +15

Oh dear. Oh well, I will keep checking etc.

I am pretty sure my AD does not have the facilities to check out the DSSD unless they have a secret underground facility buried beneath the very small shop!

Without knowing your activity level it is possible that it ran out of power.

As has been said. Wind it up (+45 turns) set it and see how it goes in normal wear.

Report back in 2 months.

What do you mean by activity level?

I am not sitting at a desk all day at all, I am pretty active, moving about a lot.

I am not running a marathon every day but then who is!
