awkward moment...

Was at a bar and a fellow and i strike up a conversation. He says ah I see you have a rolex. I looked at his wrist (it was dark) and thought I saw a breitling so I asked oh is that a breitling. He pauses and sheepishly says "oh its a seiko" I felt a bit bad and so did he. It was a bit awkward I must admit.

Some of the high end mechanical Seikos are certainly nothing to sneeze at. As a company they've actually been around longer than Rolex. My first watch as a ten year old was a mechanical boy's Seiko, which I wore for about 8 years all through primary and high school. They make some of the toughest watches around. That fellow you met at the bar has good taste.

Cannot understand why a Seiko is a watch just like Rolex and Breitling and believe it or not some Seiko are more expensive that Rolex.

I would have responded, that's great! Seiko wearers, especially Credor/GS wearers, are my kind of WIS. Seiko is a long running horological powerhouse. Yes, they have cheap quartz lines and may be better known for their department store watches but I would give a lot to own the Credor Grande Sonnerie!

I just saw a Seiko Credor chrono on Ebay - it was REALLY NICE I considered bidding on it. It caused me to research Seiko Credor - interesting info...

I'd take a Seiko over a Breitling any day. My 3 Rolexes are sitting at home today cos I've got my Darth Tuna on. Nothing to be ashamed of at all.

Seiko's rule!!

Why awkward? Sounds like a perfect opportunity for a good conversation. A SKX009 on rubber strap has sailed up to the top of my to-get list.

Nothing wrong with a Seiko..

No need to feel bad and neither should he.
Great company in the history of watchmaking.

The Seiko "Blue Spark" was my very first automatic watch. The first week I had it, I didn't really wear it. Then one day I noticed it wasn't working anymore. I did a quick Google search and my watch journey started on TZ.

I'm sorry you felt awkward as Seiko makes some very fine watches and many of our members have quite a few of them.....

No need to feel awkward let alone bad--Seiko makes fine watches and while I love Rolex there certainly are other brands out there which I appreciate and own! Nothing wrong with a Seiko!

As long as you're both into watches, you can have an interesting discussion....... no reason for any embarrassment.

I wear my Seiko Diver 200 quite often and the one I have has quite an interesting and tried and tested bomb proof movement which quite uniquely cannot be wound..... (one of the reaons I wanted one) so it just runs off the movement of your wrist.

But I've also got a WG Sub, a Red Sub, a TT GMTIIc, a 16800 Sub, a 16610 Sub, an Explorer, Breitlings, Cartiers, Omegas' etc etc etc etc and I never feel embarrassed or awkward wearing the Seiko and also never feel the need to say I have these other watches unless the conversation goes that way. The Seiko is more than capable of standing up for itself....

Ultimately, their all just mechanical watches..... the rest is hype, marketing and a sort of perceived "wealth" status all resulting from that hype and marketing. All of that should not detract from our love of the watch as a mechanical wonder.....irrespective of brand

It wouldn't have been awkward if it was me wearing the Seiko or the Rolex. A lost opportunity for a great conversation.

Hey guys, imagine if it had been Dan! Now that would have been awkward!

Seiko's are quite amazing indeed. I for one love my father's old Seiko quartz (sounds a bit cheesy but I find it beautiful and it has been loyal for a lot of years) and the more I read about them on TRF the more I find them to be great timepieces in terms of movements and beauty!
