Buy now or save more?
Hi all!
Looks like I am getting really close to pulling the trigger on my first Panerai. I have been torn between a Rolex and Panerai for some time. I dipped my toe in the water with a Submariner last year, but I still have the Panerai itch. I'm in love with the base/historics. It was between the 111 and 112, but I believe the 112 won out (love the simplicity and clean look). Somehow it is a huge, understated watch. However, while I am comfortable with the appearance of the 112, I've never owned a watch which is a winder and has no date. This begs the question should I dig deeper in my pockets for a 312? Logic tells me that the date shouldn't matter, because my Iphone goes everywhere with me and I'm buying the timepiece for the art as much as function. Thanks for taking the time on this in advance, I am sure some of you struggled with the same questions. All the best, Ryan |

Have you had a chance to try both 312 and 112 on and see how it feels on your wrist? I think when it is right.. you will know right away!
Rolex sub and a Panerai makes a perfect team by the way! Fred |

I agree that you should try both if you haven't yet as the 312 does wear quite differently than the non 1950s case. The 312 case is higher, so you should see which one you like more on your wrist.

I went with the 111 mostly because of price. Now I want to sell it and "upgrade" to the 312, 351, 320 or perhaps a 233. The manual wind is not a drawback for me ,but the date and 1950s case is a must have

233 all the way! I ended up selling/trading a bunch of models through out the years before I arrived at my ultimate PAM, the 233.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. My local AD has a 312 but is out of all base models at the moment. I've tried each on independently, but never tried to compare them on the wrist.
I know the last time I put the 312 on it felt bulky, I do have a realitively small wrist. I'll keep the group posted on my progress. Thanks again! |

Agreed, thinking about getting a dot dial myself to accompany the 312.

either one is a great choice, with neither being clearly "better" (unless one is an in-house snob

In my personal opinion... the 312 doesn't do it for me. Something about the 9 and seconds throws me off.
I would go with the 112 and pocket the difference

I had a similar choice to make and picked the luminor case (177 - titanium version of the 111) vs the 312. It just seemed to fit better, and now I wear it all day without noticing it. I suppose I would have eventually gotten used to the 312.
I love everything else about the 312, though & it does seem to be the better value on paper. |

Thanks for the feedback.
I definently don't feel like I would be settling for the 112. Actually the more I think about it, what I truly love about Panerai is their most simplistic designs, so I am going to go with the 112. The next trick will be to find one or a 111 if it was the right deal. But seeing as the 112 cost less and like them more, it should be the way to go. I have just started to look into straps, which appears could become a very expensive pasttime ![]() Cheers, Ryan |

I have a 351 & a 112. The 351 definitely sits higher and is thicker. The 112 is much more comfortable. I got lucky that the 112 OEM leather strap fit perfect with the existing holes. I do prefer the 1950 case quick strap change function. It is remarkable that both watches are 44mm, but the 112 "wears" smaller.
As for the "ultimate PAM 233", I have personnally never worn it or seen it in person. FWIW, it would be the best functional watch. In house movement, Manual 8 day, Date function. I'm not sure I would like the Domed crystal and the 1950 case as much as I like the historic case. R/ R/ |

You have to try on both at an AD and see which one sings to you more. I personally would prefer the 1950 case.

There is a never ending debate of what first Panerai you should get, but from personal experience, I always go back to basics. Meaning either a 000, 112, or 176. Those models never bore me and I always feel happy when I wear them.

Yup. I'd go with either a 000, 112 or 176.
