Getting used to the luxury of having two Rolex watches ... sharing wrist time

Now after a few weeks of being blessed with owning two of the finest (IMO) modern Rolex watches on the market today, I thought I'd share some observations on the differences between the two watches as well as the challenges with sharing wrist time.

My two: G serial Sub LVc and Random Black ExpII 42

The 42EXPII wears very similar in size to the SubC. The bracelet is a bit looser than I have my LVc set (obviously fewer settings), but overall it feels about the same (don't notice a difference). I haven't weighed them, but I'd bet they are within 5-10g of each other. Both clasps are amazing, but I prefer the look of the longer Sub clasp (just personal pref), but the EXPII clasp is superb. All in all, the ExpII is a great alternative to the LVc, but definitely seems much more on the DL in terms of wrist presence. The LVc has just so much more pop, shine, intangible appeal. If I had to part with one, it would be the 216570, but both get nearly the same wrist time.

When I shift back and forth between watches, since both have a power reserve less than 48 hrs, I would have to shift every other day to prevent having to wind them or reset the date/time. Things you may not know:
- Sub is much easier to reset since you set the time with the crown in the fully out (3rd pull position - hacked) and date on the second pull position independent from the hour hand.
- ExpII is far more painful because yes you can still set the time the same way (full out 3rd pull position - hacked). This not only sets the hour, but also the 24 hr hand (second timezone). The painful part (when shifting to a unwound watch in the same timezone) is when you want to set the date, you have to do it by the 2nd pull position (hour quickset). That's ok, although a longer process than the sub where you set the date directly, but more problematic is the fact that resetting the date using the hour hand only does NOT move the BIG ORANGE 24 hr hand (second timezone). Therefore, once you are all set, the 24hr hand is all wrong from the timezone you had it set last time it was worn. This is a necessary evil as the purpose of this watch is to be able to set the local time with the hour hand without changing the 24hr hand, which is likely set to back home or GMT or wherever you have it set while you travel. Once you get to this stage, you then have to back up the real time (position 2) and hack the hour (position 3) to move both the hour and 24hr hands forward to the correct position ... all while trying to keep the date right. Just a bit more hassle than I expected.

Maybe I should only have 1 Rolex or get one without a date for my second watch.

Honestly, these minor issues are small when compared to the great joy and use I get from these workhorses. I love the fact that when I travel, my ExpII will keep track of time back home for me. I also love the Sub LVc for it's rugged looks, tank-like durability, and function.

I am very happy ... (for now)

Great choices. You may wanna consider investing in a quality watch winder like a Wolf Designs. That will solve your date problem as you switch between those two beauties. Enjoy!

Great shots of great pieces.
Maybe time for a winder, Mark, if the hassle factor is getting to you. Or mod your AM routine to wind the stay-at-home piece that day.

With more experience, the Expl.II set protocol will become easier.

You have 2 very excellent timepieces. Thanks for the comparison, I wondered if setting the GMT would be more difficult or more of a hassle with the extra hand. BTW, great pics.

Great write up. I have an LV C and a black 16570. I've been thinking of trading that one for a polar 216570 at some point so I appreciate your comments and pictures.

Yeah! That is a great idea, father-daughter Milgausses! What is nice without a date, is that you can pick it up, set the time and you are done. Also, the date on a Milgauss is not an option, so you don't have to feel like you are holding back.
