US Shipping Problem

Have just bought a vintage watch from a seller in the USA (I am in the UK) and want to have it shipped here. The seller has been told by the Post Office that the shipping of watches and jewelery from the USA to the UK is prohibited, but can be sent to France. Is this correct?? I have had watches shipped here before from the USA with no problem and the contents have been clearly labelled.

Can anyone help?

just sent a package via fedex very very quick international shipping and my package went through paris and then to its final destination.

Fedex won't insure over $1k for shipments within the USA... not sure about international shipments.

then you can choose between fedex or UPS but mainly cause they'll insure it over the $500 limit (it may have gone up, but it used to be fedex, ups nor postal would pay out more than $500 on a loss on a watch - they'dd sell you the insurance but wouldn't honor it above $500)

that's where parcel pro kicks in - they cover the loss above the carriers limit, up to whatever you paid for - plus their fedex / ups rates are great. I'm a contract shipper with UPS and get a 22% discount. Parcel pro indicated to me they get a 40% discount and pass that onto the customer. Last 3 watches i shipped via parcel pro ran about $18 cheaper using them than if i'd put it thru my own UPS acct - go figure.

but the insurance is the main reason. If you do go parcel pro, do not select "order a pickup" - that'll add $10 to the shipping bill - you'll print the label off the parcel pro screen, package it and drop off at a kinko's or staples, whichever you choose to go with (think it's UPS at kinko's and fedex at staples)

insurance, if/when a claim is filed they'll not pay over their limit. When i first learned about this limit on "watches, jewelry & precious metals) limit on coverage, i checked with UPS and was told that they would pay. When i press the CSR with "are you sure, there's some folks saying "watches, jewelry, precious metals are limited" she came back with - "oh, .....uhm, let me check with my supervisor" and then came back indicating the coverage was limited to the then limit of $500.

just trying to prevent you the headache and the loss.

I'm sure it's in their declaration of tariffs if you care to research it on their website.

You can get higher insurance with fedex if you label it as watch parts instead of a watch. I did some time ago wit a 7k insurance.

only problem with that is, in the event of damage, ie forklift running over the watch, and they have the package to inspect, they'll disavow the loss claim.

I've done similiar simply describing as "machined part", but in the event of a loss, there's plenty of ground for them to deny the claim.

why bother playing games, when parcel pro's shipping charges using the same carrier (fedex or ups) are cheaper than you'd pay direct, and get full proper insurance?

Fedex is brill-just be sure to check out any possible import tax though...anytime I have used Fedex to get stuff to me (albeit here in Japan), they have always charged import duties, whereas other shippers seem more easy going. All the best!

Since international package through the US postal service requires a declaration form, they say no watches because the package often goes missing. You can, like previously stated, declare watch parts or anything else to get the insured value up to par.

I've run into that problem sending watches to my wife's native country.

I actually sent two packages to Cheshire from Dallas, TX two weeks ago that made it in 22 hours door to door via FedEx Priority International w/ ParcelPro insurance. I've never heard anyone say they can't send watches from the US to the UK???
