One holy grail or a nice collection?
This one goes out to all of you who have more than one watch and might have thought.. "why"?
99% of my friends have one watch and look at me like I am a little bit off to own so many. I often hear, " how do you decide which one to even wear"! So it got me to thinking, would I ever consider selling off all of my watches and have one holy special watch? I don't think so because there are so many different things I like about them all but for different reasons so I doubt there is one watch with could fill all of my wants. How about the rest of you? Anyone else feel the same or would you part with your collection to get the "ONE"! If so, what would that grail be..

I was in the same boat and had to decide whether or not to get another Rolex or sell a few and get one grail watch...after much deliberation I chose the later route and was glad I did. I still have a three Rolex collection but feel its a managable number. I will be leaving it at that...
If it were necessary I would still sell one, leaving me with a two watch collection...That would be ok but would not like to have just one, I like having a choice... |

This, although I would add the word manageable. My Holy Grail(s) are the Speedmaster Professional and Submariner. As a young teen, I had always wanted these two iconic watches. Now that I have them, I need a nice dress watch; nothing fancy or too expensive. I am thinking along the lines of a Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Contemporaine. And that will be my manageable collection.

I don't think I could manage with just one watch. I did try it, but it just didn't work out. Although all mine are sport watches, I wear them for different occasions.
The other thing about having one grail watch (for me) is that it would likely get a bit battered, so if I sold my collection and just had one 20k watch, I would be worried to wear it on a regular basis.

I dont have one holy grail, I have many holy grail. Having one watch is a bit boring with time, you've got to have one for special ocassions.
You can drive a Rolls Royce everyday but it will lose it speciality, you dont get the same experience if you drive it on every sunday or for special occasions. The same with holygrail watches, I wear my daytona every day. I dont have a holy grail, I've got another nice watches like 2 AP ROO's and a Omega SpeedMaster. Having more than one watch is nice.

Been there, done that
Like most of us, I'm addicted.
And I have been flipping watches for years, trying to find the perfect, ultimate, final watch for all circumstances. At least that's what I explained to my wife. I recently realized that having a few watches, sufficiently different, allows me to keep this craving in check. Simply switching watches when I feel like it gives me the satifaction I'd usually get by buying a new one. I am reducing my collection to three watches now, as I'm selling my JLC MC GMT. So for me: a small collection does the trick. (Although the DSSD seems nice...and the MillGauss Green...wouldn't mind an JMC MC Navy Seal either...or a Breitling Emergency...how about a Fifty Fathoms....Aaaaaaargh) Must....not....give....in....breathe slowly....gooooosfraba |

To be honest every watch I own is or was a grail at the moment of its purchase, therefore I think my personal grail is to have a collection of watches that would suit my mood or my clothes of the day.

I've been thinking in the same paths...
My holy grail would be a 16618 or 116618 blue dial. Not sure if it would stop my watch obsession though............? Great if it would.

In my experience Grails are only Grails when you don't have them. When you get the Grail the law of diminishing returns kicks in, well at least a little. A collection for me.

How many of us reasearch the purchase of a sportscar for so long, then finally buy it and then flip it or buy another soon after? How about art collectors...buy a Picasso one week and the next a pollock? Is it because of the relatively small size of these time telling treasures? It could not be price alone, because as we all know, watches can be very expensive...a million for a collectors dream is not uncommon... |

If I sell all my watches, I can get a pp5205 but I rather have a few good watches to pick! Its a bit like cars---its nice to have several cars like Porsche, Aston, Ferrari and Lambo than just a Bugatti!
