Why should we wind our totally stopped Rolex instead of shaking it before we wear it? Anyone know the reason?

Winding the watch is much more efficient way to ensure that the watch is brought up to its full power reserve. 40 full turns and you are ready to rock!

In order to get the mainspring fully wound which takes about 40 turns you would have to shake it for about 2 weeks, 24 Hr's a day.

The watch is built to take shakes and such, and it is made to be wound when moving it.

It's just that it will run a lot better with a full power reserve, and the best way to achieve that is by giving it 40 winds.

That is what the winding crown is for its that simple and to start a stopped watch it needs a full manual wind for peak power reserve to start.But just giving say a small shake to start even while wearing say for eight hours a day after if say have a desk job or low activity its doubtful if watch will reach full power reserve but just enough to keep ticking. And if more people used the crown a bit more often there would not be so many crown related problems.Now there are a few automatic watches than cannot be wound like some from Seiko.Now they must be shaken to start to wind up but its a slightly different winding system to a Rolex.

Very interesting read! I shake then wind all my pieces to bring the to the correct day/ or date when they has stopped running.

Hahahahahahahah! No, those two are wound. On my My 5130 there is no sweeping hand to indicate it is moving and I am still learning the moon phase function on my 5712

Youd be surprised though how much one shake will have your watch running for. I once gave my sub one quick shake while it was not running, and it ran for around 6 hours, from ONE shake.

Having that said, always best to wind it 40 times when it stops running!
