SS Daytona vs. AP RO 15300

I have been eying the Daytona for quite some time now. Although, the AP Royal Oak has been catching my eye as of late. I would like something slightly more dressy than my Sub and Explorer, hence these 2 options.

I would go for a white dial on either model, and would even consider a Chronograph RO if the right deal came along. Either way I would be buying it from a dealer here or the like.

I love the Daytona, but the thought of branching out from Rolex excites me a bit, just something different. So, which way would you go?

I was in the same boat as you, the ROC ended up being out of my price range so it came down to the white dial royal oak and the daytona. Ended up with the daytona but either way you can't go wrong. Good luck!

Honestly I don't think you can make a mistake with either. They are quite a bit different but both are appropriate for what you are looking for, even though I consider the 15300 a bit more dressier than the Daytona.

Remember the 15300 has been discontinued. Have you seen both in person, and tried both of them on yet?

I haven't tried on the 15300, but have tried the daytona. I have read that the 39mm RO feels large, and to me the Daytona felt smaller than other 40mm's. Is this the general consensus? I'm just trying to see how the feel is on the wrist. I know I will have to try one on obviously, just looking for opinions!

Thank you to everyone for their help and opinions

The Royal Oak wears larger because of it's length more than it's width. The lugs and integrated bracelet make it too long for my 6.75 wrist. Ironically the Daytona being 1mm larger in width actually wears smaller than I generally like. It really depends on your wrist shape and your preference, either way they are both amazing watches!

I love the Daytona, and this is obviously a Rolex forum, however - the 15300 Royal Oak is really a work of art.

Yes the Daytona wears smaller than most other 40mm watches. It's the design of the case and the fact it's not as thick as most other 40mm watches.

The 15300 wears bigger than most 39mm watches because of the thicknes of the case in combination of the bezel and bracelet design, but it still has a smaller presence than my my Daytona.

To rate one higher than the other is difficult because I own and love both although for different reasons.

The Daytona is a great watch and I love how it wears and looks.

The dial on the 15300 is awesome, and the finish and detail is amazing. The movement is awesome, and I do spend time looking at it every time I take it out to wear it.

Before deciding I would recomend trying them both on however. Some people may not like a 39mm watch. However the new AP will be along soon and it is going to be 41 mm I believe. I'm glad I got the 15300 however.

I prefer the AP because a chronograph function is pretty useless and I need a date. I think the AP is better looking.

I have a Daytona that I purchased not long ago and love it, it's a very personal thing and I haven't seen a 15300 in the flesh, but to me it just looks a bit 'blocky' as in the Daytona is the most comfortable watch I've worn due to all of the smooth and rounded edges.

It's your choice completely, just putting my 2p in

If you already have 2 Rolex, then it's a no-brainer: go for the 'Oak It's a very different watch to almost anything out there. It also wears different to "normal" watches, due to the lugs shape.

The 15300 is really nice. I prefer it to the Daytona. More versitile as well IMO.

AP but factor in their servicing costs (if that is an issue for you), albeit the way Rolex have recently increased theirs that may not be such a differential now

The gap has definitely narrowed in the last couple years. Just had my 15300 fully overhauled (minus case refinishing) and my total was $872 + tax, bringing the whole bill to just over $900. Not cheap certainly, but not too horrible either considering the quality of Audemars Piguet, and how well you are treated as a "member of the family". Nor is the figure much higher than what many RSCs are charging for full overhaul...granted, Rolex includes the refinish in their charges, but still.

The Daytona is going to be about the same as the AP. I'm almost positive a basic routine service is $800ish for either model.

It's really up to you. I have a daytona, and I like AP ROOs as well. However, after thinking that I only wear one watch a day, a vintage tt dayjust and a daytona will be enough for me for a very long time.

Maybe its just me, but I don't consider either to be a dress watch (though between the two, the AP is dressier). Perhaps you should consider something less bulky for your dress watch? A PP perhaps?
