Advice on buying Datejust II

Hi Guys,

I am most likely going to be purchasing a Datejust II tomorrow. I realise you must get a lot of these threads but I am stuck on a couple of things and would like some opinions...

I am going for the dial set with diamonds for sure, but I am stuck between the ivory coloured dial set or the champagne dial (watch 116333), are there any owners of these combos on here? If so I would like to hear your post purchase opinions, or indeed the opinion of anyone who has looked at these combos. Are there any other dials I could consider? (I definately want the diamonds tho)

Originally I had planned to purchase the original smaller datejust as I have thin wrists but the salesman in my local AD assured me the larger DJ 2 suited me because although I have skinny wrists I am tall. I have no idea about these things so I am curious what you guys think.

Hopefully I will be able to provide you guys with pics tomorrow if I do purchase, and will value all opinions! I plan on wearing this watch 24/7 for everything even if it is a dressier one hehehe

I wouldn't let a salesperson sway you, especially in regards to the size of the watch. There is a big difference between the DJ at 36mm and the DJII at 41MM. There are also many different dial options between them. Be sure you're 100% thrilled with what you choose.

Thanks for the advice. I won't let a salesperson sway me I agree with what you say, I was just looking for opinions on here. I think the bigger watch suits me better tbh. As for the dial options I definately want the diamonds it is the colour of the background I am unsure of. Wondered if anyone on here had ones they thought as fantastic with the diamond set.

The most important thing is that you're comfortable with what you choose of course I'm partial to light dials (white being my favorite) myself.

I'm confused. I am looking to purchase a Datejust II for my partner and was told that the diamond is only available with silver or rodium face? My partner prefers a blue but decided on the rodium. While on the topic, how come Rolex doesn't make diamond bezels for the Datejust II??

I saw an ivory coloured dial with the diamond set and a champagne dial with the diamond set today with my own eyes, so you can definately get them! At least in the uk you can, on page 36-37 of the UK catalogue also. These are the two I am trying to choose between really.

I own a 116333 and went with the black dial gold roman. I tried on nearly all the DJII dial options. Out of the diamond dials, I prefer the champaign. I also wear my DJII 24/7. It took me about six weeks to get used to the weight of the watch, but now I don't even notice it on my wrist. The 36 and 41 both work well with dress clothes, but the 41 works much better with casual clothes. The TT DJII looks amazing with jeans and a polo. The other great thing about the DJII is the improved proportions of the bezel. The bezel is out of this world with its sparkle. I know you'll enjoy your DJII!

Remember, when you eventually get your watch serviced you can have a different dial put in.

Depends on your age and eye sight, my TT DJ came with champagne and I couldn't tell what time it was with out my glasses. The gold hands blend in too much.

I just bought the larger 41mm version and I love it....size is perfect in my opinion....I
Love the 41mm size ..it's fits perfect on my wrist which is same size as yours.
The best advise I can give you is to try both on....one will sing to you......

I know sounds a bit crazy, but try each one on at a time and have a walk around the store. My AD encouraged me to walk around the store and even had a few mirrors positioned to get an idea of how it would look on your wrist.
The smaller dial would be more classic, but the larger dials seem to be in the fashion now.
I think I recall the Datejust 2 has to come with the fluted bezel as well and you can't get the polished one.
Either way take your time, I'm sure you will be happy with either purchase. Good luck tomorrow!

A relative of mine owns a family jewellers, they've been trading for over 100 years, he told me that when you wear a watch you should be able to see a bit of your wrist at the top and bottom of the watch, as long as you can do that then it's not considered bling

I have 7.5 inch wrist and tried on a 36 and 41 DJ at the weekend, I would be happy with either, which ever you decide on... post some pics

Love the DJII,my late father in law had the TT champagne/diamond dial,a bit car salesman for me as i dont like diamonds. I prefer the white/ivory stick dials myself,but its a great watch.

I think the DJII looks too big on some wrists. Im not a fan when it looks like the watch is wearing you. OP what's the size of your wrist? You said they were small. The dial combos you have picked are very nice. I'd personally stay away from champagne as I think it can be harder to read. Bottom line is you have to buy what makes you happy. If you don't like something or like something you will be the one wearing it.
