Silly to be sad?

So the day has come that I did not think I would ever see.

I bought my grail watch before I got married 4 years ago. Now it is in the process of being sold. Selling to a fellow Forum member so it will go to a good home for sure.

But I bought this watch new from an AD with the intention to keep it forever. Even special ordered it from Rolex directly.

But looking at buying a house and raising $ for a down payment. I could have sold some investments to obtain $ for a down, but in many ways I wanted to show my wife that I value "us" and the family more than I do my watches. It is a gesture to show her that our future is more important than anything else.

Need to sell out townhouse too, but that is a different post altogether.

So boxed up this watch last night. And was a liitle sad to think about letting this go. But at the same time I am keeping my eyes on the goal of a house.

So it it silly to be sad about this?

Don't be sad Mark, you will get a nice house and you still have your wife. So enjoy the life and get another DayDate in a few years again.

I'm hoping. But as new ones are north of $31K.

But I will take your advice and do my best to enjoy my life and our 2 year old little daughter. Who I hope will have a little yard to play in within the next year.

Then you have no need for a gold watch when you play with your daughter.

Mark, I don't blame you for feeling sad about it. May I ask how your wife feels about you parting with your grail?

We all have a lot of fun here with our hobby, but at the end of the day, they're STILL just watches, and family/health will ALWAYS come first! Do what is right for you and your loved ones.

I would feel sad as well I don't blame you one bit. But you have good reasons and intentions. Good luck with the new home (a different sort of 'incoming').

I would think that the price of the watch is just a fraction of the price of the house, but the gesture of your priorities is clear. I would have tried to keep the watch if possible.

My wife told me to keep the watch if I really wanted to. But I still have 9 other Rolex watches left in the stable with other brands sprinkled in too.

I think she appeciates the gesture. It is nice that I can do this for her (or rather us) because I want to, not because she is making me. Plus I'm lucky to use the $ for something good as opposed to having to sell to pay off any type of debt.

Exactly! Besides, it really shows us your true nature: a man who has his priorities straight and who is willing to do a sacrifice for his family.

I wish you to buy that watch again and soon but in the meantime enjoy your future home and your family time!

If you have so many other watches why choose this one in particular ? If it was bought before your wedding I would of thought it very special. I'm surprised you didn't sell a few others.

Either way you have done the right thing. Think of all the memories you will have in your new house. You enjoy your watch but your family enjoy your home. A nice house is so important. To me it's the only material thing I value more than watches.

If raising the funds would have demonstrated putting family first, I truly don't understand selling your grail instead of all those others that could have netted the money. Did she want that symbolism of giving up your favorite? Would you have wanted her to do the same, to prove something to you?

I don't think it's silly to be sad about it.
