I have a Sub, but that was purchased new.

I've purchased other "lesser" watches used, but they were never keepers. I got them in fairly good shape, wore them till I tired of them, and flipped them.

But this one - a DJ - in a keeper.

Owner says it's about 13 years old, and has been kept in a safe for basically its entire life (owner wore it when he first received it, then put it away until now). I have no reason not to believe him.

As such, what do I need to do (if anything) when I receive the watch? Does it need a full service? I like to clean/ wash used watches upon receipt. Do I need to get it tested first for water resistance?

I would take it for service, no doubt about that. I wouldn't even wash my hands with it as it is now.

The gaskets must be dry, also the oils in the machine must be thick. It needs a service for sure after 13 years, many of them without working.

I would take it to my local trusted watchmaker and get it serviced. You never know what has happened inside the watch. At the very least get the gaskets changed and pressure checked

Thanks guys. I missed the obvious - I'd also want someone to check it out to make sure it's 100% authentic/ original Rolex. Again, no reason to believe otherwise, but can't be too safe these days.

Would any watchmaker that has experience with Rolex be able to help me with this?

I live in the SF Bay Area, so I'm thinking of just taking it to the Service Center in the city, I'm sure they would know whether the thing is 100% authentic or not.

Take it to RSC for an estimate and they should point you in the right direction. Congrats, how about some pics?

Thanks. I don't even have the watch yet, it's in transit as we speak! Super excited!

Take it to a local watchmaker and get it water resistance checked and tested on a timegrapher. That'll tell you what next steps need to be.

In addition to a good servicing, I'd get it appraised and/or inspected for insurance purposes. I paid $75 for my appraisal and it was worth it.
