Smoking

How many members here smoke?

I have never smoked cigarettes in my life but I do love a good cigar, although the public smoking ban in the UK has dampened the pleasure a tad.

Cohibas, Montys and R&J are my favourites.

Any other members indulge in this "social taboo"?

Wow, Bo - that is some collection. You don't see many younger guys smoking pipes (at least not in the US). The only pipe smokers I know of are grandfatherly types!

I don't smoke, and my hubby enjoys an occasional fine cigar every now and then.

My brother in law and I enjoy a good cigar from time to time, usually while watch horse racing. I'm must admit not knowing much about them though. Got a crash course in Little Havana. Gave up ciggs over 8 years ago.

I'm always amazed at that great pipe collection Bo. I have a couple myself, but it has been a while since I've used them. I also enjoy a good cigar now and then, but it has also been a while since I've had one of those. What's wrong with me. I need to live it up a little more.

I don't smoke. My dad smoked in his early 20s, quit in his late 30's and to this day still suffers from its effects (coughing, phlegm).

Bo

That collection of pipes is truly awe inspiring. Congratulations on attaining such a wonderful collection.

I have wanted to smoke a pipe for the last few years but I have abstained for two reasons...

1. My wife thinks at 31 that I am too young to be smoking a pipe!
2. They do seem a little complicated what with the cleaning, packing, lighting, packing, relighting etc.

As for cigars, I do love Cubans, we were married in Cuba last year and I must have had at least a Mareva a day. I did treat myself to a Cohiba Esplendido on my 'stag night'.
In the Uk they are about £25. In Cuba it worked out about £7.

It almost knocked me off of my feet. I am 6'6" and this cigar had me staggering all over the place!!!!!!!!

Has anybody here smoked Dominican cigars? I've been thinking of picking some up as they work out cheaper than Habanos and I'd rather smoke a handrolled than the cheaper machine rolled Cubans.

Yes, from time to time (when in the US for instance), I go for Opus X (Fuente), Davidoff Special R and La Aurora Preferidos (#1 or #2).

I am a cigar smoker on occasion. I like Padron 1926 and 1964's. But at over $20 a stick, I do not smoke many.Maybe a couple a month. For regular smoke, Rocky Patel Vintage series are real nice for the price. 8 bucks a stick.

I have a cigar question - I'm pretty anti-smoking on cigarettes, but since you puff on a cigar without inhaling (right?) are there any health effects? Provided you don't get the second-hand smoke... the only cigar puffing I've ever done was outdoors and it was kinda fun (you know, being a girl and all, I felt very rougue-ish).

Dear Lisa,

smoking in general is a BAAAAD idea!

But if you are to smoke anything, I would suggest CIGARS or a PIPE.

Reason being that you don't inhale pipe and cigar smoke and that cigar and pipe tobacco don't contain all those artificial additives that are as or even more harmful as tar and nicotine.

The main reason why I smoke a pipe is that:

1) it is relaxing
2) smells better, at least what the comments of others are to judge from
3) is less expensive
4) no inhalation, less health risk (as above described)
5) joy of VARIATION: different tobaccos, collectiong different pipes.

As for cigars, my favourite cigar is actually a HONDURAN cigar called "Flor de Selva Double Corona".

But I also smoke a lot of Cuban cigars, such as:

Partagás Series D, No. 4
Cohiba Siglo VI
Upmann Sir Winston
Ramon Allones Small Club Coronas

Among the Dominicans I smoke, my favourites are:

Davidoff "Special T" and "Grand Cru No. 3".

Oh, Bo, I KNOW smoking is a bad idea. I'm just being goofy when I talk about puffing a cigar. I mean, I have done so maybe 4 times IN MY LIFE. And when I say pretty much anti-cigarette smoking, I mean VERY anti. My dad was a sneaky smoker most of my childhood - tried to hide it from us but we all knew. It was a dirty secret. Now he has emphysema, but he's made it to age 85 so it could have been much worse for him. I shouldn't get started, but what bugs me the most is parents who smoke around their kids. And then wonder why Junior is sick so much and always has ear infections... good advice is to save the money from cigarettes and buy ROLEXES. What better motivation is there?

I guess I was one of the few considerate smokers. I never smoked inside my house nor in my car (I didn't smoke in other peoples' cars nor houses). I always smoked outside my house, rain, snow or shine. When we went to restaurants for family dinners, we always sat in the non-smoking area, same when we flew (when smoking was still allowed). I never subjected my family to second-hand smoke.

After going through a bunch of medicals last week (for anaphylaxia)...I am a heavy set guy and due to this, I did enquire about giving up cigars for the health issues.

My doctor stated that it depends on how often you smoke cigars as to whether you will suffer any major adverse effects.

If you smoke more than three a day, he stated that you have as much chance of heart, lung and oral 'complications' as cigarette smokers do.

Ironically he said passive smokers would be at a higher risk as they would inhale what you are 'puffing out' and thus suffer the consequences.

I see a cigar, like a decent Rioja or a St Emilion (or maybe even a watch). I see it as a luxury, a treat. I therefore only have them every so often...less than one a week easily.

I asked my doctor is it a mistake to keep smoking them and his professional opinion was yes but then added only because they are bad for you but then what else is bad for you?
His opinion is it's a balance between relative risk and enjoyment.

Although times here in the UK have changed, between the age of 16 and 30 I have spent a considerable amount of time in pubs or clubs, most of which were full of smoke.

An odd cigar can't be any worse than some of the polluted air in a few of my 'locals'.

I have therefore decided to keep treating myself a nice cigar now and again.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'm pretty safe with a few puffs every few years - always outdoors and never around the children.

I smoked for ears. I got Bladder Cancer.

Risk factors for Bladder Cancer.

#1. Smoking

#2. White Male

#3. Over 40

Hard to quit. For me there was nothing beter than smoking some cigarettes after a stressful day at work with a few pints of beer.

Fortunately my Cancer was caught early as I tried to go back into the US Military Reserves after 9-11. They found blood in my urine during the physical at the Military Entrance Processing Station. I was conditionally disqualified and told to go see my Doctor. I did. He sent me to a Urologist. He discovered a tumor in my bladder. The next day I was admitted to the hospital and had surgery.

I have been Cancer free for some time, but still have to get scoped every year. Yes, that means that they shove a camera up my penis. If that isn't motivation enough to make any male smoker quit, well, then good luck to you. You are on your own.

I gather you enjoy that camera thing, huh? LOL

I smoked for quite sometime and quit in 1995. I tell you, there were times when I'm all stressed out that almost made me go back to smoking.

Let me put it in an economic perspective. Cigarettes were $14.00 a carton from the PX when I quit. Nowadays, they cost from $45.00-$50.00 a carton. If you smoke a carton a week, thats $2600.00 a year. YIKES!
