Sub dial on GMT?
Ok, dont shoot me down just yet and hear me out!
What is the possibility of changing the dial on a GMT for a submariner one? I have been offered a dial and insert for a 16613 at crazy cheap money and wondered if I could utilse them on my 16713 for a change in the future. If its possible, anybody actually done this? As I said just a thought so dont beat me too bad!

The bezel insert will fit. Kind of detracts from the aesthetic of two of my favourite watches but.. I know you can put an ExpII polar dial in a GMT.. I'd get your flame-proof underwear ready if I was you.

Thanks Puffy, so is it a case of just asking my watchmaker to swap the dial? What about the gmt hand, does this get removed or should I leave it on?

I know you don't want to get "shot down" but I have to add that I am against any and all franken watches
Sorry I just think it's a bad idea to go switching and mixing parts. If I had my druthers a sub woud be a proportional 42mm, have an orange GMT hand and a red "submariner" on the dial. But that watch doesn't exist and I'm not going to make one

Lots of people say that and mean it but things happen and these watches do end up on the market despite initial best intentions. That's exactly why I make mention of it and why I AM a "touchy purist"

so would that make it a replica Sub then? cos it won't actually be a Sub ( nor a GMT if you lose the hands ) and I suspect all you will have achieved is a talking point down the "Dog and Duck".
Just not sure its really a great decision..... you could buy the dials cheap and try flip them on for a profit though |

I also couldnt give the smallest S**t what people in the "dog and duck"? think. I know its a genuine GMT and that it always will be, after all the original dial will be sitting at home.

GMT dials are not directly interchangeable, although it can be done..
The hole in the middle of the GMT is larger to accomodate the larger hand-set stem, so the Sub dial may not fit over top of that larger stem.. Anyway, not sure what the point would be.

May I suggest you look up the word "replica" as replica isn't always bad but its directly related to making a copy or reproduction, which this would be. You'd be making a GMT look like a Sub, hence changing its appearance from one watch to another is more than customisation, you'd be taking its face/bezel and possibly hands off and it would look like a Sub, so that's replication.
Anyway, I'm sure the lads down the "Dog and Duck" will be pleased for you. But personally I can't see why you'd do it - why waste the GMT function just because you can get a cheap dial. |

OK, I get it, people dont like swapping dials etc
Unless of course it was Jocke who did it...... https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=236497 Then its amazing! Back to the original question, will it fit and if so what happens if I remove the GMT hand?

Do it mate. Sod these touchy purists. The hand isn't essential in order for the watch to function but its mechanism on the inside will still be working. Customisation is awsome.

thanks for reposting Jocke's Franken Watch I'd not seen that post - that was amazing to see the shots and how easy he made it look to completely alter the appearance.
I'm immediately ceasing all online purchases, as given what he did to that GMT I'd say you can turn a GMT into a fully blown Lange and Sohne complication ( or at least he could ). btw - if you do change it, take some pictures so we can see the transformation. |

I honestly can't think of why you would want to do this and why you think you may end up with a better looking watch than you had before. For the amount of work that has to be done its just not worth the effort IMO.
