High-End Selvage Denim?

Hey All,

I've recently been hit by a new fashion bug, and that his selvage denim. I've bought a couple pairs now (tab and bone/A.P.C), but I was wondering if any you were into it and what your favorite brands were? I'm started to look at stuff made exclusively in Japan(i.e Flat Head, Oni, Samurai, etc)... Another expensive ass hobby. Damn it.

Interesting topic. I have also recently thought about doing same, but... how the hell do you make sure of sizing? I have found that each manufacturer seems to have their own ideas.

Also, do you need to factor in "shrinkage" after the first wash???

These guys seem to carry a few brands www.aeroleatherclothing.com
Some are 30oz denim that will stand up on their own.... you need to CLIMB into them! here http://www.aeroleatherclothing.com/p...ail.php?id=445

General rule of thumb I see is get size you usually get(which come a little larger initially) or go one size up. Ones I've been greeting are usual size, and know they stretch a little over time.

I've been straight addicted. I like how the key thing is to break them in your own style. Best denim and construction.

I have sampled a few varieties at makeyourownjeans.com

Not exactly high end but i was able to send in an old pair of favorites that were out of production and have them cloned.

Now i have them in various denims, button styles and even a few emblems for originality.

Levi's

they make a wide variety to the exacting specs of the 40's 50's and 60's.

i would bet you will find a perfect fit!

ps i sold jeans to get me through high school, it was my job to fit the right person with the right fitting jeans... seriously.

Thanks.

I am finding I need the "WIDE" variety as I am getting older.

Here is the second generation of the clones (left) vs. original (right)

The first set came back pretty spot on dimension wise but with heavier denim i have tweeked measurements to get the right puddling around my shoes and freedom in flexible situations.

That being said i don't want to seem to be singing their praises. Certainly not up to designer selvage quality, this is simply an interesting option out there for the denim aficionado.

Ya i suppose the term "clone" should be used loosely.

It's more fit than finish. I added the button/loop to secure my third pocket so expected certain deviations.

Naked and Famous makes skinny/slim versions, but what you're going for is a straight fit. From there you're on to boot cut, relaxed, etc. I have been wearing straight and slim-straight. Seem to fit me just right. Keep in mind stuff will shrink and stretch depending on how you wash/etc over time as well.

I don't own any Naked and Famous yet, but I've been thinking about a pair.

for example: they have a traditional 501 button fly (young mans style:-))
and another option on the other end of the spectrum is a super wide cut with no belt loops but only suspender buttons more a farmers relaxed fit.

all made exactly as they were when originally produced.

all the size's and fits are defined by the model # generally the higher the number the looser the fit.

Yeahhhh I wear plain old Levi 559's.

My bro, who designs for a prominent fashion house, says (generally speaking) if you spend more than $70 on jean's you're trying too hard and wind up with funny looking pockets.

my fav is dior homme indigo raw denim. if you're not skinny enough, you can 19cm or 21 cm version. follow that, Helmut Lang is very nice as well. they're a bunch out their, if you're looking for less expensive, apc or japanese brands are the good choice.

i've haven't worn raw denim for about 5 years. my fav denims now that are rick owens drkshdw jeans and carol christian poell dead-end overlock jeans.

I'm just fascinated how the Japanese are getting the BEST cottons from around the world and using old fashioned looms and seeing machines(in some cases hand-stitching all the way). The raw makes it more awesome because each pair is like your own piece of art. It breaks in and fakes/creases based on your wear. The longer you wear them, the more badass they get. Combine that with HIGH quality, and that is awesome. I've seen some
pairs from Japan/etc going strong after 15 years, and then being sold on eBay for $150.

Bad habit for a guy who likes the BEST quality... *cough* Rolex.
