Submariner 116610N, Bargain?!

Dear all,

I am about to buy my husband his first Rolex for his birthday. I started looking a few weeks ago with a budget of around £2000($3200). Found a DateJust Turn-O-Graph, in great condition, serial U(so 1997-98), black dial on a jubilee bracelet, from a dealer with original box and 12 months warranty for about £2000. But then I came across a Submariner 116610LN for just £2500($4000), it is sold by an individual, not a dealer, hence no warranty. However from the pictures, the watch appears to be in excellent condition, and since that particular model was launched in 2010, it can't be more than two years old. The submariner is being sold, with original box and manual, but the seller claims he cannot find the papers, hence the low price. I don't know how much they go for in the US, but in the UK, you can't find a Submariner 116610LN for less than £3800($6000), which made me think this was a bit of a bargain. And also the seller welcomes buyers to check the watch's authenticity, before buying. The only thing bothering me now, is why is he selling it online, as he should be able to get more or similar to his asking price from a rolex dealer. So I guess my question is it really a good deal?

Many Thanks
Maria

Buyer beware. If you want to get an idea of real offering prices from reputable sellers, check the classified and who's who sections here in TRF. Personally, I am a fan of the turnographs, and they can often br found for a great price, as an under-appreciated model.

Good luck in your hunt!

I paid $6800 USD for my 116610LN a year and a half ago right here on TRF, from one of the top power sellers, and this was a couple of price increases ago. The deal you mentioned seems too good to be true I'm afraid. All I know is a plastic warranty card is not worth thousands of dollars or pounds.

The only advice I can offer right now is to continue to perform your due diligence and proceed with caution.

Good luck and stick around the forum!

Run away from that private seller and if possible, report him here and on ebay if that's the case.

Good luck on your search!! And let us if anything!

Cheers

116610 in average condition would go for around £4k, so anything under £3.5k would be suspicious, this is a fake or stolen, maybe from Brent Cross recently.

I would have to second that...it could be either fake or stolen.

That price seems scary, I'd be cautious.

There are so many high quality non-genuine Rolexes out there that I would never buy from some random person.

While it may be tempting to see a price that is almost half of what this watch is going for on the market as a bargain, many of us would see that as a red-flag. So called "papers" are simply not a reason to reduce the price of this watch.

I would approach such a deal with much caution. I suspect that this watch may not be authentic..

I agree with Larry, lacking papers will not pull the price of a modern rolex down by much. Its just a piece of plastic card for the 116610LN. A 116610LN even on its own without any box, papers or anything else at all will not be selling at $4000. I suggest not to touch this 'deal'.

As everyone has already expressed, if it's too good to be true....

I would proceed with extreme caution. If it were me, I'd look elsewhere for the 116610.

This is either the bargain of the year or something is very, very wrong. If you decide to proceed, do so with extreme caution.

Sounds dodgy. Where is the watch advertised? Can you send a link to it so we can have a look? Agree with others, if it sounds too good to be true, it is! Be very cautious.

If it seems too good to be true, then it usually is. Not many people out there willing to sell something they own for a substantial loss, especially something that is well sought out and easily sold.

Absolutely avoid it. No one would sell that watch for that little if it was legit.

Welcome to the forum. as for buying the watch. I would stay far away from it. Something sounds way off to me. Unless you are sure it is authentic with no aftermarket parts, I would run and save up for the real thing from one of the trusted sellers on here.
