Yes, I agree that Rolex watches are great watches, but the author never adequately explains his "Rolex Submariner Test" and comes to no conclusion whatsoever.

I counted 6 grammatical and spelling errors in the first 6 paragraphs. I think basically the author's point is that if you're paying 7-10k for something, you shouldn't be getting an item of worse quality than something else that costs 7-10k. Thanks, Captain Obvious.

I understand the point Ariel is making even if it is not so obvious to some readers.
The Submariner and also, in my opinion, the the Daytona hold value better than the vast majority of watches from Rolex and other watch manufacturers.
To me, this is an important consideration when spending $7K to $10K for a stainless steel watch.

The point he is making is not that the Submariner is the best watch you can buy for $10000, but that it is a good reference point. If you know nothing about watches, it's a safe bet because it's popular and reliable. If you do know something about watches, you can use it to measure your decision. I would agree in that the Sub is a very good point of comparison - the price point gives you a lot of options, and it has been recently updated, so you can properly compare it to the latest offerings from other brands

It's when you apply a bit of watch knowledge that the Sub C falls down. It's more expensive than its competitors. The movement is virtually antiquated and has flaws that haven't been adressed (and those that have aren't the best solution to the problem, see the hairspring), plus it's not pure to its purpose any more (which may be a consideration for some, it is for me). The best things about it are the bracelet and resale value - however, the bracelet has been trumped by that of the DSSD and Pelagos, both from the Rolex stable. The most flattering thing I can say about the new Sub now is that it is a decent all-rounder that you can sell on easily, but even then, there are watches that do the job better. From this, there are several competitors that I would argue are a better watch, either for the money or like for like.

It's clear that the article has been simplified for an uninitiated audience, but the points he is making are fairly straightforward

I think we use similar tests for other large-purchase, durable items, such as cars and real estate. For example, if a Honda Accord costs, say, $30K, that is a good benchmark because, while it is not the most aggressively styled car or sporty car, it is a great, reliable, workhorse that will get you comfortably from point A to point B. So, using an Accord as a guide, what can you get for, say, $5k more or $5K less than an Accord, or, if you are considering a car for, say $28K, how does it compare to an Accord over the long haul?

If one is buying a home in a particular price range, what can you get? A new home with a small back yard, an older fixer-upper with charm, a large house on a very busy street, or an even larger house that requires you to have an insane commute to and from work?

I think the Submariner test is helpful, particularly when there are now some very pricey "fashion" watches out there, or expensive watches that don't hold their value as well as a Rolex. My husband spent a lot of money on a Tag Heuer over a dozen years ago, and the watch is essentially worthless now. It is a TT automatic that retailed for about $1100...I think a Rolex SS Sub was less than $4K. Is the Tag still worth 25% of what a 2000 Submariner would be fetching right now?

this ariel adams is a flip flopping journalist/blogger/youtube......his interest into rolex just began recently when he was able to get his hands on a splurge of rolexes to review, check his youtube channel, not a single review of rolex peices in the first half of 2012....and if u look into the comments on some of his videos, they dont really mention rolex in a good light.....however his videos do shed light on other brands besides rolex tho!
