Tag or Omega???

Looking for this years Merry X-Mas to me watch and have got it down to 2. Either a Tag Carrera or a Omega Speedmaster pro. I can get a much better deal on the Tags but I'm trying not to let that be the deciding factor. What do you you all think.

Tags are nice... They have a bit of a following..

I just think the Omega outclasses it and the Speedy Pro is an icon among chronos..

I have both and would say go with the Omega, they are better watches IMO.

Some things to consider:

Depending upon the model, some Speedmasters are manual wind watches whereas all of the Carreras are automatics.
Omegas generally hold their value better than Tags, however both depreciate faster than Rolex.
My most accurate watch ever is an Omega(Coaxial PO +0.8 secs/day), the Tags I own are less so.
I have never used Omega service, however Tag service had my 2001 model Link for more than 4 months and I only got it back then because I called the AD and raised hell.

You might want to look for a pre-owned example of each, you can save a ton of money that way even for NIB examples, that way you can buy both.

Omega without a doubt. I've always preferred their designs.

Until one week ago, I always kinda liked the Speedy Pro, but I never thought it looked awesome. I was wrong though, because I saw one for real recently and this watch looks fantastic! Probably the most classic/timeless design by Omega.

Thanks for all your help. I think if I can find a decent used Omega I might buy both. Like I said before my Tag dealer has awsome prices so I may be able to afford both. Any Idea what I might pay for a decent used Speedmaster PRO? And wear would be the best place to look for one

I am not sure if I am breaking any rules by posting these, but apologize if I am. Look in the classified section at:

http://forums.watchuseek.com/index.php
http://www.timezone.com/

Prices are going to be all over the map, but make sure you ask for and check references before parting with any money.

Go with the Omega. I have an old 6000 series Tag and an Omega Speedmaster DD and the detail on the Speed is unreal.

Similar to Rolex sport models, the vintage Speedie Pros are creeping up in price and you can likely find the latest version used or new for less than an older model. I've been after an older (late 60s early 70s vintage) model with the Lemania 861 and they have been in the 2,000-3,000 US range. I've seen preowned recent models (1861 mvmt I believe) for well under 2K on a regular basis. New or old, you just can't go wrong with the Speedmaster.

If I had to choose a brand, Omega. If I had to choose a particular watch it would be and is the Tag Heuer Monaco.

From a recent convert, definitely an Omega. I am just amassed at the quality and accuracy on mine (it gains less than half a second a day, just incredible accuracy for a mechanical watch!)

I like Tag Heuer also. Never had a problem with any of the watches I bought from them. Last year I bought a Tag Heuer Carrera model 2010 w/the black dial and SS band. The watch was incredible, easy to read, heavy, and had the see through back so you could gaze at the movement. I paid close to $3,000 for it and just sold it for $1,000. If you buy a Tag Heuer buy it because you love them because the resale value sucks. If you do a search in the for sale section you will see the thread where I had it for sale. Here is a link to the exact watch I had and some info on it.

http://www.tagheuer.com/the-collecti...=CV2010.BA0786

I now have a Rolex Daytona, 50th LV Submariner, GMTII and just sold my Diamond Dial DateJust. Sorry the photos are not the best but I can say after owning both Tag Heuer and Rolex I can say Rolex is far superior the Tag Heuer. Dont get me wrong, Tag Heuer is a great watch and I will own one again.

Phil, if you compare your pic:

With this one from Omega.ch:

then you see that the colour of the SuperLuminova is much more white on the pic from Omega.ch.

My question: I have not yet seen the Omega SMP Chrono Diver in real life. Are the hands and indices more green like shown on your pic, or white, like shown on the pic from Omega.ch?

I guess your pic just shows the dial in slight "lume mode", but I would like to know for sure.

Thanks, Vernon. I knew it glows with a green colour at night, but the pic above shows greenish colour of the hands and indices in daylight. So I wonder if the hands and indices are that green in colour in real life - and in daylight, or more white like on the pic from the Omega site.

Hi Bo, sorry for the slow response (been doing a trade fair in Sydney this week selling our maps)
I dont have the watch with me but from memory I am pretty sure they do have that green colour even in natural light as shown in the photo, but I will double check when I get back to Brisbane at the end of the week and confirm with you.

Finally I am home Bo and you have probably found out by now what you wanted to know! Anyway, I have just checked the colour of my lume in natural light and it is certainly not as white as the promo photo and not as green as mine shows, it's a bit in between, sort of a light tinted greeny blue, very subtle, certainly not white.
Hope this helps, good luck

Thanks for the clarification!

Does the indices and hands have the same colour as the ones of C.J.'s newly bought SMP?

I wouldn't hesitate to go with Omega--the Speedmaster pro is a classic.
I've owned a few TAGs, and they are nice but no Speedmaster.
