Been looking around for a dress watch. I currently use my sub for formal occasions such as black tie events or when a tux is required. I was looking at the ss/plat yachtmaster ( can't seem to get a black dial dyatona at msrp ), however, my girlfriend claims that the watch should be have a leather strap ( i have a PAM 48 but it looks to casual ). My other options are the IWC portugese chrono in ss, or a glashutte panodate in ss also. So what do you guys wear for such occasions.....

The SS Daytona is the dress watch for me. The SS GMT IIc I use an an everyday "beater".

can't afford those at the moment... they're not selling it at msrp. also, i already have the GMT II in pepsi.

I think that perhaps your girlfriend has a point about the leather strap.
Paneria is far from dressy, so I would not consider it.
My Exp II covers all bases for me, but what about a Rolex Prince?

I wear my Sub for everything but it is currently my only watch. Were I too get a 'real" grown up dress watch the two you mentioned are excellent choices.

Others might be, depending on your budget:

Vacheron Constatin Patrimony
Patek Phlippe Calatrava
JLC Master series.

I don't know that I get dressed up enough to warrant the kind of $$$$ for any one of those. A great choice on a budget for a dress watch is the Longines "Conquest 1950"s series. Basically replicas of the classic Longines from that era. Nice attention to detail on the dial and casework for the $$$. They are beautiful watches in any price bracket.

Lot's of good choices out there besides Rolex......

i find the dj's a bit small, having gotten used to 40mm watches. that black bezel on you GMT is sweet. I've got mine on pepsi and was thinking of getting the black. just got to find one in the black market, rsc here keeps the old one if replacement is made by them.

I wear a suit and tie daily for work. I chose the "bling" of a SS DJ w/ WG Fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet to compliment my look. Personally, I feel that the Oyster Perpetual/Cellini models are perfect for dress occasions. The Professional models should be reserved for casual occasions. As a matter of fact, I want the GMT next...for wear with jeans, sneakers, and a T. Just the opinion of a 28 year old=)

It's a Rolex. Even an Air King (no offense) is dressy by comparison to other brands. There is no Rolex that wouldn't look great with a suit or Tux. Besides some here only have one Rolex and others still waiting for their 1st.

If you want to go with a Rolex, buy the SS Datejust--it looks very nice as a dress watch as the picture above shows. But overall I tend to agree with your girlfriend that for formal occasions a leather strap watch is best. If you want to go "low budget", look at Revue Thommen who has several nice "gold plated" watches in the area of $600.00 or so. If you can afford a bit more, go for the Omega DeVille or the Zenith Elite or perhaps a Blancpain. All are nice choices. But if you heart wants Rolex, the SS Datejust would be the way I would go.

There are plenty of thin classic gold watches on a strap that you could buy that wouldn't cost you a fortune. They are just go better with formal attire in my view.

Rolexes are great, I love the Daytona and GMT-IIC that I own. Lots of wrist time, some even with suits, but a watch that goes with a wet suit or flight suit doesn't belong with a tux.

As you can read, knowledgeable people are all over the place on this issue and taste is very personal thing. Do remember however, that high price doesn't automatically mean the item is appropriate for all events.

This gets wrist time at formal events and some might even find it too "complicated" or busy.
