I've found one other thread that adresses this question, but what do you feel the most iconic Rolex is, not just for WIS's but the general public? When one thinks Rolex, what's the image that comes to the mind?

I voted for Sub. However, if the question is addressed to the general public, shouldn't the Daytona be included in the poll as well?

I think to the Genral public it's most differently the DateJust or DayDate , Hands down!! I remember people telling me it's not a Rolex unless it has the crown at the 12 o clock!! But as for the wis community I would say its gotta be the Submariner!!

The James Bond association! It has that tool watch rugged look and feel! It gotta be the most recognized watch in the world and the most counterfeited watch in the world!! The Submariner is Rolex !! Anyone who owns This watch can not contest of its durability and is reliability !! Some may claim this watch the perfect watch, may it come in black or blue Two Tone of all Gold or SS it truly is the perfect watch in my opinion !

Agreed completely with that. To this forum and people that have a better understanding of Rolex, I'd probably have to say the Sub (it sells the most also).

I voted for the Sub as the most iconic as far as John Q. Public goes, due in no small part to Steve McQueen and James Bond, among others.

But in the WIS world things get more interesting. I'd give the nod to the GMT. It is basically as long running as the Sub, has an equally compelling back story, and unlike the Sub, the whole concept of the GMT watch was innovated by Rolex.

I agree, the GMT is popular among the WIS, but I'd be surprised if the GMT was the first Rolex most purchase.

I agree. Why is that? Why do forum members (over 60%) see the Submariner as most iconic when they understand the general population doesn't?

I think for both WIS and public its the Sub. The DJ design is not unique enough for a normal person to instanly recognise it as a Rolex, however the Sub with its distinctive black bezel is.
