Why is Submariner a desireable watch?

Hi and Happy New Year to you all Have been wondering why of all the Rolex models, the Submariner is the most desirable here in the Rolex Forum. No offense to anyone, but i am just curious since i have observed that the Submariner is very famous here in the forum when in fact there are lots of other models which have more bling and in fact much more nicer like the DateJust or Yatchmaster or even the GMT IIc. If you look at the 2 tone DateJust, it is much more nicer and in fact more attractive than the Submariner. I find the Yatchmaster also nice because of the bezel while for the GMT IIc its because of the ceramic bezel and new bracelet. So i just wonder why a submariner is more famous But for me, if i would upgrade from a DateJust, its because i find the Datejust small for my wrist and would get the submariner because its much cheaper than those that i mentioned

Ken,

Tastes are pretty subjective..

There are 9,000 members on the forum and only a few of them post..

To say that the Sub is the most desireable might not really be the case..

Legacy wise, it is a pretty historical design and lots of other designs were based on it. I believe in the sports line, sub is the most well known, most affordable also ....

IMO the TT Datejust is as much the quintesenntial Rolex as the Sub. I have a large wrist and I love the look and feel of my DJ. I get the impression that the bulk of people on this forum are younger, active people and are more attracted to the sport line of watches. A few of us old geezers on here would kill for a gold Day/date if we could afford it. I know I would!

It is tough, rugged and classy. It is the most iconic watch of all time. I will always love the design.

It is unquestionably a masculine watch, and makes no attempt to be "pretty". It has earned the brand power of being the iconic quality water watch of the world and is what comes to first in mind when one talks of a divers watch for most people. The whole line is great, but this baby is the franchise in my view, as the granddaddy of all sports tool watches in the high quality echelon of watches.

The Stainless Steel Submariner Date, Black Dial is elegant and holds its value historically equal to or greater than all other Rolex models. Is it prettier? Only the Shadow Knows.
best,

Sean Connery wore the Sub when he was James Bond.

I think there's a similarity in the appearance of the Rolex sports line that makes all the watches very easily identifiable as Rolex watches.

I think a big part of the point of wearing a Rolex is being seen wearing a Rolex, and most of the sports line of Rolex watches are clearly Rolex watches (the Explorer is more subtle than the others). The choice of the sports watch is about what it suggests about the wearer. It suggests toughness and an active lifestyle, while still advertising your economic success, good taste and appreciation of luxury.

I think there's a particular appeal of a watch that suggests you regularly participate in water-related recreation. Love it or hate it, nothing says "I might be a guy who has a yacht" like that new Yacht Master II. The Sub suggests that you might be a guy who is into SCUBA diving.

As a functional matter, I kind of doubt that most owners get a lot of use out of the dive-timer bezel, and I am completely perplexed by the folks who don't dive but fork over extra money for the Sea Dweller, especially when they also have a Sub.

The TT DateJust and the yellow gold Day-Date are similarly recognizable. But wearing that, or wearing gold at all, makes a different kind of statement. My father was a gold Rolex kind of guy. If I bought an expensive dress watch, I think I would get a Patek.

Of all Subs made, IMHO the 5513 is the most beautiful.

No wonder that it is the Rolex model that has been in production the longest time (from 1962 to 1990)

Because it's by far the best all around dive watch you can get. It performs well out of the box, but holds its value.

My first Rolex I actually buy will be a Sub. It's the best way to start imo.

What everyone else said :) If there is only one watch that I could have, the SS Sub Date would be it. I do have it :)

"So i just wonder why a submariner is more famous"

Because it is!

Unlike the "other" Bond watch, the Sub's claim to fame goes beyond the movies.

Maybe I am too big a guy. The LV seemed too small. But the solid gold blue Sub felt fine. Same dimensions????

Thanks alot for your inputs guys. Just sold my datejust because i am planning to get the submariner. But for me, my main reason for getting it is the 40mm size plus its affordable than other sports models

Pessonally I prefer watches with second time zone hand(GMT Master & Explorer II),but Submariner is quintessential sports watch made by Rolex. So the thing is about tradition and legacy!

I, too, am amazed that when I came here I realized that I had not purchased the true iconic Rolex. I had always thought it to be the YG DD - or the SS Daytona. Nope. Its the Sub. Maybe its because the REAL James Bond (Sean Connery) wore one (ND, I think) or its appearance in other movies. Or maybe its the pricepoint. Or maybe it's just the incredibly instantaneous recognition that the watch gets from the general public, but the Sub is the Rolex to own. And it will be my next watch.

I like dive watches in general and the Rolex Submariner is one of the most iconic dive watches of all time. It's rugged and stylish and since I like having a watch on while swimming, it works out perfectly for me.

Sub = #1

The Submariner is .... without question ... and by any standards ..... the quintessential Rolex.

Wear one and women will want you .. men will want to be like you.

If you consider yourself a real man .. an adventurer, a cowboy, a deep sea treasure hunter ... then saddle up and take the plunge Marlboro Man. The north face awaits you.

If on the other hand a close game of Scrabble gets your adrenaline going .. well then a date-just might be the right one for you.

just my 2C of course.
