Swim the English Channel; win a Rolex! Well, if you were the quickest...

I was browsing through the dangerously good Christie's catalogue for its next auction ... well worth the time it takes to download ... and came across this great little story.

http://vintagewatchesmiddleeast.com/...isties-may-13/

Turns out Rolex used to sponsor a prize for the fastest swimmer across the English Channel (who knew; not me). One of those prizes makes up half the auction lot.

It was won by the fastest chap across the channel in 1975, who was an Egyptian doctor.

Rolex packed in the sponsorship in 2005, but this could be a nice buy if you like Submariners, swimming or Egyptians: mumtaz!

Love a little history with my watches.

+ 1. It is well known that a lady first crossed the channel wearing an oyster swimmproof watch as a promotion of the then new Oyster design.

So, it seems that Rolex kept up the tradition, until 2005.

Yeah it was cool. Got me thinking about a feature on 'prize watches'.
