Yesterday I tried to buy 3 Rolex watches in NL
Yesterday, I was out shoppig in The Hague, The Netherlands. I walked in to the local AD to look at the 116710 LN, I've been thinking of buying one for some time now.
I was pleasantly surprised that they had one in stock. I then went on to look at the 116713 LN and the 16610. I asked for a good price if I took all 3 and this is what I got: 116710 MSRP €5,350 no discount 116713 MSRP €7,780 discount to €7,500 16610 €4,400 discount price €4,000 I have to say I was disappointed with what they'd offered me. If the prices were better, I would have taken all 3. What do you think, would your AD do a better job? How do the prices compare in your country? Craig |

Hello Craig
You should have made them an offer, and take it from there. You never know your luck. The worst they would say is no. Three watches in one sale, I'm sure they would be more flexible. John. |

Hi Craig, what exactly were you hoping for?
If you had a figure in mind then you should have disclosed this and seen what they said. No seller will give you his best price first price so perhaps there was room for manouvere.

I've gotten 15% from an AD for buying two. The deal went so smoothly that I think I could have done a little better - but as Dick Parsons (outgoing CEO of Time Warner) says, it's good to leave a little on the table when negotiating.
My experience in asking for a discount has been that you're better off in a small store that has been family owned for years. Preferably not in a "high rent" area. Call and make an appointment to see the owner. Know what you want. Be low key when asking, but be respectful and polite. Ask only once. A smart business person is not going to let a large deal walk out the door. An employee may simply not have the authority to do otherwise (or is foolish/lazy enough not to care). |

I like the general advice, I was hoping for about 15% then I probably would have bought them. I agree dealing with the actrual owner of the shop is by far the best thing to do.
This particular shop in The Hague is well known for it's poor customer service but there is only the one AD! The first guy I dealt with actually said "no one gets a discvount on a Rolex", of course I knew better and told him so! Oh well I return back to Kuwait with no new watches!! |

When you consider you were just walking in from the street the discounts offered are not too bad, IMHO.
Many places the SS Sub Date is not discounted, at all. 400 Euro discount on it is very good, I believe. The TT GMT IIc could have been discounted more, though, since AD's earn more on TT and precious metal watches than on steel ones. The SS GMT IIc? Well, like the Sub Date, it is rarely discounted, and if, normally only to established customers.

I thought you would have done better by just saving your Euros and buying in Kuwait with US$.
I don't think you missed great opportunity, good luck next time. |
