Most people give up due to a lack of parts, money, or interest. Piecing together a Rolex is pricey.
I once found an original 1675 movement, dial, case, and hands for sale all around the same time from different sources. Each was a great deal but the sum of the parts was more than what I would have paid for an original, intact specimen.

I bought a vintage trench watch on ebay, it had fancy lugs, and looked like a lot of the rolex trench watches I had seen, the dial was roached, and the caseback was missing and it was a hinged case, I only paid $10 since the only markings for rolex would've been on the case and dial less than scrap

Bought a project and lost my "behind" on it. Thought i could buy it and put a couple hundred into it. I ended putting more into it than i paid. I don't buy projects anymore...

Yes - looked into this myself and no doubt many people have! It carries very high risk from the outset though, and difficulties in sourcing parts (which some believe Rolex ensure happens as they do not want 'private builds') togther with other complexities effectively makes doing this virtually impossible, unless you are very lucky!
