I showed my new YG GMT to a watchmaker friend and he told me not to use it as my daily watch. Something about hazing and the watch losing it's luster. He also mentioned that while the gold is of good quality from Rolex you can't have it polished as many times as a SS watch. He may think the watch is plated and doesn't know it's solid 18kt gold.

Should I be concerned about hazing...or whatever that is.

Sounds like you got hazed by your friend...

I've never seen Rolex gold haze out, it's definitely solid 18k gold, not plate. It is softer than steel so take care of it. Likewise, in the long run, it will not take as many times to the polishing wheel as steel can.

I'm a Watchmaker and have had my Day-Date II for just over a year now wearing it 5 days a week to work, so far no luster loss... And modern Rolex watches are not plated.

Were any Rolex timepieces gold plated at one point? I was under the impression that every gold Rolex made till today have always been real gold.....14k in the beginning and then 18k.

Well technically it would be called "gold filled" or "rolled gold" but there were a few made like this in the 60's - 70's, the model 6694/13 comes to mind.

There is a big difference between plated and goldcapped. The TT Omega's and Breitling's for example are goldcapped. The gold links have a thick layer of gold surrounded. It should last very long, longer than full gold. I still like the solid gold links of Rolex better.

The only thing thats not solid gold is the crown. I seem to remember Jocke doing a photographic tutorial on a gold Rolex and the case had some kind of hollow cavities and the crown had a gold sheet wrapped over it.

They were gold filled. My Ad showed me a 1980s dealer's catalog that showed them. They were called presentation series and were for sale to businesses and used as long service awards or for other achievements. For commercial sales only, not individuals like us. I have only seen one and it was engraved on the back plate. Looked like a datejust.

I had a late ninties tt sub, the gold was as bright as ever, and I could tell from the bracelet the watch was worn daily for years do to the strech. Enjoy your watch. And don't worry about it hazing.

Your AD is smokin' something!

Rolex GMTIIC Gold is SOLID 18K GOLD! Trust me! Mine is a 2008 Reference and there is NO "HAZING" or whatever...I would NOT wear it as a "daily" wear watch! 18K is far too soft. Mine looks as new as the day I bought it!

Utter nonsense. Mines been worn regularly (more than once a week), tossed in sand and surf, gone hiking/biking/camping/boating/golfing, and it's still as shiny as the day I got it two years ago. Does this look hazy to anyone??

PS: based on everything my gold watches have been through, IMO they're solid enough for daily wear if desired.

I've been toying with the idea of two tone or solid gold as the next one. You are not helping my bank account!!!
