AP Royal Oak Chrono Vs Patek Nautilus Chrono

Well Guys,

I have narrowed my next watch down to two options and I have shopped around from the best prices I can get.

I would like to really thank some of you who shared your contacts. It really is much appreciated and shows how great this forum is!

With the Patek, the best price I could get is 15% off Swiss list price, compared to 28% off the AP.

So this is how it works out:
£43,500 at a 15% discount for the Nautilus Chrono
VS
£24,600 with a 28% discount for the AP

Which would you go for considering:
  1. Looks
  2. Value - there is a substantial difference in price
  3. Quality
  4. Repair and Service Times
  5. Resale
  6. Status

just my opinion

Looks - AP - I like royal oak shape and the layout of the sub dials more
Value - AP
Quality - Case, bracelet and dial are about even with edge to Patek for the inhouse movement
Repair and Service Times - AP
Resale - Patek - But its a newer release so if larger discounts can be had in the future it could lower resale value.
Status - Patek

For the price difference I would go with the RG ROC and get a SS Nautilus.

AP. You still enjoy much more bang for your buck with the brand. At least for now. Status might have to go to PP, but only by a tight margin IMO.

Again, I'll have to go with the AP but I'm not into status symbols so I cannot fully put myself in your shoes. I'd prefer to go with the looks and the quality/history of the brand and though both have great reputations regarding the last two points I happen to prefer the ROC.

With the money you spend on the Patek you can have 2 Ap's.

Both brands are amazing and are my top two brands. You really can go wrong either way. Good luck.

I will give it a go, though I don't own either I have seen both close up.

Looks - depend where your taste swing, but I prefer the ROC more shiny bracelet

Value - No contest here isn't it? AP wins hands down

Quality - The PP is marginally better build and finish IMHO.

Repair and Service Times - there is a thread in PP forum talking about PP's extra long service time. So this is obvious.

Resale - PP is well know to hold value better. However, as with all gold pieces, you take a bigger initial hit when reselling. This is also a new PP model so not sure of the reception yet as it is barely in 2nd hand market

Status - PP

So overall, the law of diminishing returns as I don't think the Nautilus is twice the watch of the AP ROC. I will go for the AP ROC unless money is no object. Will actually prefer the black dial over white as I think it matches and contrast with the RG case better.

Just my 2 cents.

By the thinnest margin, I'd pick the PP but then it's on my "must have someday" list.

for me:

looks = ap
value = ap

these 2, looks and value have the most important point than the others.

so ap ftw!

Lol... Same people, different sub-forum...

PP for all of the above............

In 5+ years you can buy another piece to wear while the 5980 is being serviced...

I personally don't see them as comparable due to the massive price difference.
AP ROC is an AP ROC, it 'might' compare to a steel Nautilus 5980.

Like others, I prefer the Nautilus by a thin margin - but only due to trying it on and inspecting it in person. The quality is clearly a hair above AP, not to mention the resale value and rarity.

the nautilus has very ugly design. the movement is jewel, but the case design is cheap 90 dollars watch,

take a look at AP chrono pusher, is way more solid elegant feel. the crown is also looks more elegant. the bracelet looks nicer. and the 8 screws on the bezel gives the character!

patek is very small compare to your big wrist.

overall the AP is way more classy. AP FTW!

Funny, the cases of both of these watches was designed by the same person: Gerald Genta.

In any case, this pic shows a more scaled comparison of the sizes:

I'd get the AP - but with a black face.

The AP looks much better on you than the PP.
