This is the Rolex/Tudor discussion section. Try the watches non Rolex section. I'm sure there's some chatter about em there :-)

Cartier is a jewelry company that happens to make watches. Rolex is a watch company.

For the record, I really like Cartier watches and think they look great (though I wouldn't wear them all), whether it's a quartz tank watch or another model with a mechanical and well finished movement they do have some beautiful ones.

Huh? Must have not heard about the history of the Cartier Santos. One of the first, if not the first, wristwatches from more than 100 years ago. If that is not watch making heritage, I don't know what is.

Agreed. They were one of, if not, the first to produce wristwatches. I own a Calibre de Cartier, which I very much enjoy. The first manufacture movement by Cartier. Yet I have to agree that Cartier lost its touch for quite a while when they were doing pretty much only ETA-based watches (not including Collection Prive). That's why my first Cartier was the Calibre because it was in-house. I always loved the Santos 100 but just couln't buy it because it was purely ETA. I hope they are getting their sh*t together and make more in-house movements and get back to watchmaking rather than purely designing watches.

To me, Cartier is synonymous with tank watch, which I have zero interest in.

Certain manufactures get love while others just don't on any forum... I've never seen Cartier bashing here before. And if there was any confusion about the quality of Cartier, all one would have to do is look at some of their tourbillons they've put out over the past decade. Nothing short of astounding

For me it stars with style, and Cartier has nothing in their line up that appeals to me. Great history and lineage but I don't care for them.

There are many reasons to not like a particular brand, the whole "they are jewelry maker" thing though to me is nonsense. Their fine watchmaking collection is frankly nothing short of incredible. For the more common folk (who still spend up to $10K on a watch), the Calibre and the Calibre Chronograph are nice additions. I do agree though that they need to start spreading their in-house movements into the rest of the line sooner than later. |

Guys - the OP asked why there isn't love and some of the comments are the reasons why (whether factual or perceived).
If I walked into the Cartier store, there's a good chance the first watch I pick up will not be in-house. I'd also bring up that this is a watch forum where people are passionate and fanatic about watches...if you see someone wearing a Tank on the street, do you automatically think that person might be a WIS? I don't know about you, but even with a Rolex, I automatically assume it's a 50/50 shot...something like PP, AP, sure, it's safe to go up and have a convo, but with a Cartier, never. |

I quite like the Calibre de Cartier but there's no room for it in my rotation. I could see it if I didn't have a Panerai but I don't think it would get worn all that often.

I am not keen on the current models- but Cartier do make lovely watches.
My mother gave me her 30 year old Cartier- she had left it in a drawer for several years and said I could have it if I had it serviced. Came back from Cartier Sydney with a new battery and service and new band- looking as good as new- and keeps perfect time after all these years. Have to get around to taking a photo of my simple little Cartier watch. Love it. |

I like them, but I don't like them enough to get one with my limited toy funds ... :p
Maybe some day ...

besides being lumped in with other names like LV, gucci, in the publics eyes etc etc. they look cheap imo. or not as highly finished as other swiss watches.

Even if I liked Cartier watches, I highly doubt I could pull off wearing one.

Go to your Cartier AD and check out their watches, they are definitely not cheap looking and the finishing quality is superb.

Just today, I was contemplating the Cartier Ronde Solo. I really like how simple and thin the watch is. I tried the Santos some years ago (nephew's) and I really like it.
There is definitely love for it with this member. |

The Cartier ID Two is interesting, if beyond the realm of affordable.
