Patek Philippe Quartz
My wife saw a watch at our local AD - the Patek Philippe 4920. Problem is, it's a quartz - and a lot of money. Is a quartz ever worth a lot of money? Your opinions, please.

In the horological world, I suppose it would be pretty pointless spending so much money on a watch without a soul!!

If I ever get a Patek, it certainly wouldn't be a quartz model.
My motto is never to spend more than a few hundred bucks on a quartz.

Problem is many women's watches are quartz.

Rolex, Blancpain, Audemars, etc. make fine mechanical women's watches.
Also, who says that a lady can't wear a 34mm Calatrava?

The 4920 is named the Twenty-4 by Patek. There are many models in the reference.
They are jewelry watches first and foremost and come with a highly developed quartz movement. In essense, they are vehicles for diamonds, hence the high price, and also considered haute-bijoux. |

I doubt that a Patek quartz would be any better or more precise than other high-brand quartz watches.

I see nothing wrong with a quartz Patek, or any Pakek.

Pretty much what I thought, I guess, but the wife likes it. A lot. So, despite my reservations, I aim to please.......

As others have said, I tend not to buy much quartz, especially at that price. As JJ said, a quartz watch lacks a "soul". My guess is that your wife might feel great prestige in the fact it is a PP. She obviously doesn't have the same reservation about quartz that we would, but she is the one who will wear it. Frankly, in a case like this, for me to make an argument, it would depend on how your wife thinks. Would she be amenable to and argument over quartz versus mechanical? Maybe, or maybe not.

Show her the Gondolos... especially the asymmetric cases. Explain to her the significance of the Calatrava Cross and Cotes de Geneve hallmark on the movements...
Good luck!! |
