Bad Intentions!

Ok, so my boxing posts arent the most exciting, but tomorrow we have undefeated Kelly "the Ghost" Pavlik form Youngstown, OH Vs. the former undisputed middleweight champion of the world, Jermain "Bad Intentions" Taylor! (Little Rock, AR) They are fighting at a catchweight of 166, so no title belts are on the line. The first fight Taylor dropped Pavlik in the 2nd, but Jermain punched himself out and is not known as a strong finisher( ala Tyson, Trinidad, Leonard, De La Hoya). Pavlik came back and TKO'D Taylor in the 7th or 8th rd. Taylor dropped his long time trainer Ozell Nelson in Favor of hall of famer Manny Steward. He fired Steward and went back to Ozell Nelson, who trained him as a kid and through the amateurs. I think Taylor wins. This could set up matches betewwen Jones Jr, Hopkins, Calzaghe, Jeff Lacy, Antonio Tarver, Clinton Woods, etc. Jones said he wants to fight Oscar! That's a joke. He lost so much muscle mass to drop from heavy to light heavy (25lbs pure muscle.) Too bad it's also on NBA ALL Star weekend. Rudy Gay, Slam dunk champ, 2008!

Hey Steve, I wouldn't worry too much about it. You're obviously empassioned with the sport and quite knowledegable to boot. I'm sitting here @ the beginning of the Taylor/Pavlic 1 fight 9/29/07 now airing on HBO. I like boxing but am no where near as educated. At least you have a nice new TV to watch the fights on... Oops, down goes Pavlic (2nd Round). It's the 3rd round... they have skills but none too technical.

I've had more than my share of threads that sat there... Hasn't stopped me yet...

Exactly. Taylor is big, athletic, but probably cant walk and chew gum at the same time. Taylor has the tools ( he did end Bernard Hopkins' 20 yr reign of ubeaten title defenses) but he lacks something,,,,,footwork!! Get him against the ropes and all 141 lbs of me can finsh him off. In the center if the ring, he is a joy to watch. But he keeps that right hand too low. Heck. What do I know. But Taylor is marketable. He's strong, big, a polite southerner ("yes ma'mm". "no ma'mm") good looking, but his ring skills aren't the greatest. I laid a baby wager straight up ($50) on Taylor. I m gonna have to wait til tomorow cause the NBA al star weekend is a lil more exciting! Plus it's not $59.95!

Low is right... I noticed the same. Vicious uppercut if he could connect but Pavlic has a more classic and approaching crisp style. Straight right was a primary weapon. Taylor showed some signs of good footwork but allowed himself to get trapped far too often. As an armchair technician, it's often frustrating to watch fights as the path to victory seem so clear yet... if actually in the ring, I'd probably be horizontal, staring at the ceiling for the most part. Exciting sport...

For straight toe to toe action, I recommend Arturo Gatti vs. Mickey Ward part 1, Marco Antonio Barrera vs Erik Morales part 1, Oscar DLH vs Fernando Vargas, Diego Corrales(R.I.P.) vs Jose Luis Castillo part 1, Marvin Hagler vs Thomas Hearns, and the ultimate in contreversy, Meldrick Taylor (at the time in the early 90's he was considered like Floyd, p4p#1 in the game)vs Julio Cesar Chavez. One of the craziest, controversial fights i evr saw. That's all I can think of now.

I've seen most the fights you list. A few comments... Mickey Ward, brawler, wears his own blood a lot, usually can't see by the end of the fight. Oscar DLH, never liked him much. More about the game than the fight. Had to dig in later in his career and all the glitz didn't help him much there. Hagler/Herns... wow. Chavez was a unbeatable machine... just solid in so many areas. Saw the Floyd/Chavez fight. Surprising for sure...

Actually the joke was Gatti would start bleeding during his ringwalk. Forgot to mention Pryor/Arguello 1. The "mysterious" bottle of fluids, the comeback by Pryor even without the bottle (to prevent diahrrhea) wa still a great fight. Kostya Tszyu vs Diosbelys Hurtado-both fighters hitting the floor in the first, Tszyu vs Sharmba Mitchell both times-just destroyed him. Tszyu's right hand +Zab Judah's chin=Dancin with the Chickens!
