How to justify gold watch?

What would you do? I'm in a dilemma right now...

Option 1, trade a IWC plus $6000 for a TT SubC blue bezel.
Option 2, trade a IWC plus SS GMTc plus $13500 for a yellow gold GMT.

I'm having a hard time believing that a yellow gold GMT is worth a SS GMTc + a IWC + a TT SubC blue bezel + $3000. That's three watches plus $3000 cash or one yellow gold GMT!

Please help me reason this... Is the yellow gold GMT really worth it?

To help you with your dilema you might want to state what IWC is in the mix?

It is not to me. Same watch.

If you want gold then get it. If you want to trade/sell the IWC then do so.

Nothing to justify, it is a luxury purchase.

This. To put it in other words, none of them are actually needed. If you are torn over the deal, that's your "inner you" telling you the same.

Boom. Love the green dial. And that's really what does it for me. The combo of yg and green is perfect.

If I were in the OPs situation, I would not think twice. I'd dump all the SS models (or as many as I could) and try to whittle it down to a SS and gold watch.

Seems like you are hesitating, so I'd think about it some more until you come to a decision where you are totally comfortable and have no regrets. Then you'll really enjoy whatever you decide.

Agreed....especially with the green dial....just makes the watch for me. Trade in values for your watches seem a bit low IMHO.

To me, gold is not practical. But, in this watch game we all play, what really is. I say if you want it, do it!

If you want gold then nothing but gold will be satisfying for very long. I like solid gold more than steel. If I had a steel sub on my wrist I would continue to want a gold sub and chance losing money selling the steel sub.

It is worth it some and not others. Value is a perception of sorts, and yours is what matters most.

x2 The gold pieces are aspirational models that some find worth the cost of admission...it sounds like the OP perceives more value in the watches he would have to trade...go with your gut. If it feels like the "wrong" time to upgrade, then continue to enjoy your collection as is.

Brilliant post...
"Price of admission" sums it up so well...
There is no other way to possibly 'justify' or rationalize such a thing...
It is what it is... A Rolex will always be worth more than the sum of its parts

Nothing to rationalize. Either you want the gold model or you don't. There is nothing rational or value oriented when it comes to precious metal watches. If you still like the watches you propose trading, don't do it. For me, the answer is clear.

If you no longer want those watches that you have mention that is one thing, but if you still like and wear them, I suggest that you save the money for the gold GMT and just add it to your collection.
I am looking at adding one by the end of this year myself.

You could see buying a gold Rolex as an investment. :)

Justify?

If we ran our lives like we do business, then we would not have 80% of the stuff we have...

When you consider a basic PP 5711 in SS costs more from a trusted seller LNIB than a gold GMTc then it doesn't seem that bad value at all for what you get. And at that price you will take a loss of only 10-15% on resale.

When it comes to gold here is how I think. Yellow is my least favorite color. Gold is heavy and soft and looks hideous on me as a white guy. It looks great on my asian, persian/indian, and hairy Italian friends. If I'm going to drop X amount of $ on a watch esp Rolex I would rather get the more durable and less flashy SS version and put the difference in gold bullion in the bank.

I love Rolex as a brand and as an amazing timepiece but gold just kills it for me.
Don't get me started on stones btw.

At the end of the day get what you like. I have many friends that love a gold Rolex. My father has a diamond gold jubilee presidential he wants to pass down to me in the future. He made me promise not to sell it and I won't . I will never wear it either.
