The 50th running of the Daytona 500

Well the Daytona 500 is about to start in a few minutes as I write this. I never really followed the race in the past but since its the 50th running of the race, I wanted to watch it this year. Its all of Nascar's greatest drivers competing in the most prestigious and important race and I think its gonna be fun to watch.

Is anybody else going to watch it? Who do you think is going to win the race? Jimmie Johnson has the pole position and I think has a good chance. I also like Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Unfortunately, I don't have a Rolex Daytona to time the race but I will wear my Explorer II while I'm watching.

Have a nice Sunday everybody. Also the NBA All Star Game is later today!

Lee Petty won the first running of the race in 1959, 49 years ago. Kevin Harvick won it last year, Richard Petty has the most wins in the Daytona 500 with 7.

The green flag was waved and "The Great American Race" is underway!

Thanks for the reminder. Does anybody else remember when "stock" cars were truly stock?

I just saw footage of those cars before they started the race. Wow those cars looked awesome.

Heres a good picture that I found of the stock cars way back in the day.

This was from the first Daytona, 49 years ago.

My dear mother used to drive one of these. It was only driven on Sunday to go to church.

The 1970 Plymouth Superbird Hemi Coupe 426-cid/425hp was the last that I remember.

Geat finish, although with plate races, they usually are. Nice to see Newman pull one out. I'm a Gordon (Jeff) fan myself, but when he went out, I was rooting for Junior or Casey Mears. Still, Newman winning was pretty cool. First plate win for Penske (did you see him wearing a Hendrick hat in VL? Classic.).

Gonna be an interesting year.

I love auto racing. NASCAR, IRL, CART, F1...I am glad racing season has finally kicked off.

Left turn, left turn, left turn, left turn...you'd think they're driving in an oval or something. Oh wait

Give me WRC over this stuff any day.

I used to be a big NASCAR fan until Dale Earnhardt died at the Daytona 500 in 2001. Racing just has not been the same for me since.. I miss watching him race.

But I did watch the race yesterday and I was pulling for Dale Jr or Tony Stewart to win...
