I quit for the mrs' birthday earlier this month. It's been three days and no smoke. I've chewed about 10 pieces of nicorette so far- this is easer than I though.

Good for you now try to be a non-smoker

I don't smoke but my dad stopped 41 years ago - cold turkey. Back then there were no nicorette gum packs so he just sucked on candy and chewing gum.

Smoke-free here

BELOW IS MY RANT....SORRY IT MAKES LITTLE SENSE. I feel better now!

I had smoked from age 10 (yes 10) to age 21. I had an older Brother who persuaded me to be cool like him! My parents smoked but did not do it in front of me or any of my siblings and somehow we all ended up smoking. At age 10, i used to smoke about 4 ciggs a day, to and from school. I quickly "graduated" to about a pack/day by 7th grade. I continued this habit for quite sometime and never let up. I met the a young lady who is now my Wife and she smoked as well. At one point, she suggested we quit and use the patch. I could not use Step 1 because it made me sick and I started on step 2. After one box of nicotine patches, I did not need them anymore. My Wife and I successfully quit in 2001 and I have not picked up a smoke since! My Wife on the otherhand has started and stopped at least three times. I think it is worse being an ex-smoker than a non-smoker. It drives me nuts and we bicker about this topic nearly once a week. I want her to quit and she claims she "enjoys it!" How can you possibly enjoy inhaling that crap? I never enjoyed the actual smoke, I just thought I looked COOL then i was hooked. I try talking sense into my Wife but of course the drug has her clouded. I asked her, "what if I drank (alcoholic) everyday, would you help me realize I had a problem and help me quit?" I realize there is no stopping the machine but there is always hope!

No offense to anyone who smokes but it's nasty! Good for everyone who has been able to kick the habit! Just think of all the watches you can buy with the money you have saved!

That was about the grossest thing I've seen in a long time. I am the Executive Director of a drug/alcohol treatment center. I have worked with drug addicts and alcoholics for thirty years. I worked at Hazelden, Betty Ford Center, VA System in Minneapolis, and other programs.

I quit smoking myself December 15, 1989 and sobered up from alcohol and drugs in June of 1977.

To all who have quit recently; congratulations and hang in there. It does get better and your quality of life will improve 100%.

To all who have yet to quit; also hang in there. Don't quit quitting. One day you will succeed.

Life is too short / Live it well!

I quit smoking on the eve of Dec. 24, 2004, cold turkey. I did it for the right reason...my family.

Well it's been 2 weeks today and I have no plans of starting again. My trick has been going out for "smoke breaks" and just breathing slowly- like I'm smoking. I've yet to have a craving. Maybe I'll transfer $6/day into a new account as a reward.

I don't remember the exact date but it was in September 1995. Wifey nagged me into quitting - it was painless compared to her nagging...

That reminds me of an old Stephen King short story I read years ago. A company was offering a 100% guaranteed stop smoking program. And they had 100% success. Turned out they would amputate one finger of the smoker's spouse each time the smoking spouse cheated and lit one up.
