It was a very drab dull yesterday, not really suitable for photography so I thought I'd try out my new D300. The following pictures were all taken at ISO 1600 due to the very bad lighting conditions. From these results under the conditions today, I'm very pleased.

These were taken with a Tamron 200-500mm. I usually use a Nikon 300mm 2.8VR with a X1.4 or X2 teleconverter. It's too heavy to lug back and forth to Saudi where I work so the Tamron gets put in the bag as it's a lot lighter and I've had some good results with it.

Here's an example of the Tamron lens in good light.

Nice shots!

In spite of popular misconception, overcast days are better for photography, in many respects, than sunny days. Much less contrasty conditions and the lighting is much more even.

It looks like the D300 has excellent high ISO performance

I recently picked up a D80 and am having a little buyers remorse. Great camera but the D300 has some great technical advantages. Have fun w/your new toy...

Ringing or banding of wild birds is quite common. We have an authorised ringer or bander in our small group of bird enthusiasts in Bahrain. On our rings is a serial number and a request to return the ring to the British Museum. It helps to track the migration habits of some species and if we get a recapture, it shows how the bird is fairing. At capture, the birds are weighed and certain areas measured. All the data is sent away to the British Oranathologist Trust (BTO) for compilation. Mist nets are used to catch the birds, these are very fine mesh nets that have folds in them that act like pockets, where the birds get trapped.

Have you tried the live view feature yet? It takes a little bit of getting used to, but it works pretty well. The D300 is a sweet camera.

At ISO 1600 that's amazing clarity. The new processing system in the D300 is a step up from previous Nikon technology.
