Maybe there is no such thing called Grail

An interesting thought jump to mind this morning. I think only thing people want is More, maybe there is no such thing called Grail, or we should say there is no all time Grail? :)

I agree. I would someday like to own a Patek, but I wouldn't call it a grail.

Agree as well as there is always another. There are plenty of grail like options though and I do enjoy collecting them.

Moving Target...34 years ago I had a 1973 Cosmograph. Wanted a Sub and got one. Wanted a TT Blue sub got one and a Slate Serti. Wanted a Daytona had three, still have one.
Wish I had that 73 cosmo back!

Great example!!

Bought a BNIB Sub 16610 in 2007, worked in construction & literally never wore it so after around 2 years I sold it. Boy do I regret that day now. Not only as the price has increased incredibly, I paid £2600 now as you know they are £4,000+ but the fact I loved that damn watch & find myself looking at old pictures of it in my wrist wondering where it is now. Sounds dumb but owning a Rolex is like having a really beautiful loyal woman. They can't be replaced!

I will get one back I've promised myself.

A grail is something you can never own. so, once you own it, it is not a grail anymore. Another watch them slots into the grail status.

I agree , but think the grail is in the mind, but only for the time waiting /wanting to buy the next ,,,, then it starts all over again.........

Actually "A Grail" would be the one that nobody will get to have the pleasure of owning. It would be something like a ceramic bezel Daytona made out of Unobtainium which would be produced in a limited number being ..............1, kept in a vault at Rolex where nobody knows the combination.
THAT is a Grail

I think it's subjective; some may well say that they have acquired theirs and are content, while others will NEVER be satisfied.

My stainless Rolex Submariner must be my grail. As long as I am wearing it, I experience no longing for any other watch.
When it has been off for service and I have worn another watch, I always feel like something is missing.
I have experienced "incremental happiness" with other material things.....cars, firearms etc. always looking for the next best thing. Never with the Sub. So I guess that qualifies it as the grail.

If you're right about that, then my all black Y-series GMT-II must be my grail. OTOH, I used to lust after this one:

Now I hanker for this one:

or its SS sibling.

Oh, well, either could be a grail for me.

I used to think there was grail which for me was the Smurf until I bought one and love wearing it. BUT as soon as you get your so called grail there will always be another one which becomes the grail and on and on we go. After my Smurf I fell in love with the WG SkyD and had to have it..Haha.

As human beings we are never satisfied and always want what we cannot have or think we cant have..

For me there is the achievable grail 116619 and the un-achievable Platinum Daytona.

I believe there is an ultimate grail, a high-end, very exclusive watch that you can only get if your life steers to a super-positive direction (winning the lottery, unexpected huge payrise, inventing something BIG, unexpected huge heritage $$, etc). And there's always the grail, which I'd much rather call "the next grail", since once you get it, you will always have something new to wish and hunt for. "Chase is better than the catch"

I disagree with most of the posters. A grail remains a grail, even after you own it. My grails were always the sub, GMT, Explorer II. I own two of those, and they are still my grails. The PP Nautilus is also my grail, and it will remain so after i own it. (One day)
