Does anyone besides myself use their watch to tell time any more???
I was on a plane the other day and the fellow sitting next to me was wearing a Panerai…You couldn't miss it…
I would guess that the gentleman in question was about 30 years old give or take... The woman sitting on the other side asked him if he had the time… To my amazement, he pulled out his cell phone and got the time off of it, instead of looking at his watch… From where I was sitting I could clearly see his watch and it was indeed set to the correct time… Okay, I know I'm getting old, and maybe the younger crowd do things differently...but the thought of looking at my cell phone instead of my watch to get the correct time never occurred to me…??? I mean…That's why I wear a watch... |

Ha, that's funny. I definitely use my watch for the time. I actually pull my sleeve up to check the time when I've got my cell in hand. Maybe I just like an excuse to look at my watch.

Interesting concept, a watch to tell time. Yes I do and will take it even further, I also use the GMT and chromo functions as intended. Who woulda thunk?

I have also seen it, I am older as well, I would never look at a cell for the time if I am wearing a watch, I think that some younger (not all by any means) people are wearing watches as a jewelry accessory.

Definitely not all! But I agree, I'm probably more of an exception than a rule.

Ha. I definitely use my watch to tell time, but I never set the date. I switch watches enough that it's not worth setting the date. So you might catch me checking my phone for date.

If I am wearing a watch, I will always use it to check the time. I do think that a lot of younger people wear a watch strictly as an accessory. You'd think that people with fine timepieces (e.g., Mr. Panerai) would feel the same way, but, unfortunately that isn't always the case. Some people have the money for a nice watch but could care less about its intended purpose. It's sad, but when you think about it, it's no worse than people who buy sports cars just to drive to the supermarket.

Interesting incident, though with a Panerai on the wrist I doubt the passenger was that young.
But it does make one wonder (sarcastically) if telling the time will become a lost art, like making change without the cash register telling the clerk exactly how much to give you back. Will parents even bother to teach their children how to tell time in a few years as the digital read out on the cell phone will eliminate the need to actually read hands on a dial? What's gonna go next, riding a bicycle?

It is hard not not to laugh when you see someone struggling to get their cell phone out of their pocket (sometimes over 30 seconds), when they have a watch on their wrist. I have asked, "Why don't you use your watch, it would have been faster"? I always get a blank stare.
I wear a coat and a long sleeve shirt and find that if I extend my arm fully, the coat and shirt pull back and the watch is exposed. I then bend my elbow and look at the watch and ask them if that was not faster and easier? Sometimes they get it, sometimes they do not. |

I use mine to tell time if I don't have my phone in my hand. I get more use out of the date feat myself.

Funny stuff guys...watches have definitely changed as far as the "younger generation" is concerned. Here is a good one...
I recently gave my best friend's daughter a very nice vintage stainless steel manual wind Omega Seamaster as a graduation gift for graduating from Brown University in R.I. I gave it to her personally at a small party the day she flew to Florida to begin her career with Disney and I set the time to east coast time zone and wound it completely for her before putting it in a gift box. She opens the watch...loves it and heads off the Florida with her new watch around her wrist. Two days later she calls her dad (my best friend) and tells him her new watch is broken. He has her ship it back to him in California to have it repaired (unbeknownst to me because they didn't want to make me feel bad about giving her a bum watch)...you know where this is going...lol. The watch gets taken to the local watchmaker who simply winds the watch and low and behold it is running perfectly (I had it fully serviced before gifting it)...the Brown University graduate who graduated very near the top of her class did not know anything other than battery operated watches existed and had no idea how to make it work again :) |

On two separate occasions I've been in meetings and noticed the person sitting to my left or right was wearing a watch set to the wrong time on closer inspection the watches weren't even running. One person in particular wore his watch this way all the time. "A broken watch is correct twice a day" comes to mind

I'll admit I've done this once before, granted it was right when I got my watch and idk what I was thinking, I was literally staring at my watch in line at a antique shop shortly after I bought it (you know that period of time after you buy your watch where anything shy of a natural disaster could happen and you'd still be staring at your watch) and I was watching the sweeping seconds hand, Somone asked me for the time and without a beat and pulled out my phone and immediately realized how stupid I looked and never made the mistake since. But I'm 19 and my generation really do wear watches mostly for jewelry. I on the other hand would ditch my phone before my watch

If only there was a watch similar to the Daytona that had a date function.
