15400 as a daily wearable ? or shut up and buy a Rolex ?

I'm looking for something that I can wear on a daily basis. Something that looks good with a suit, but can easily go with shorts or jean. Something I can travel with and simply wear without worrying about how appropriate it is and something that can take the daily grind of life.

What are your thoughts on the 15400 for this? I have the 26400 AP 44mm Offshore Chrono Novelty and a Portuguese (my dress watch) and realize that I should probably just buy a Rolex GMT (I like the two tone) and be done with it. I have never owned a Rolex and while I respect the brand I have always found them to be a little too common for my liking. Although I can certainly see a GMT II on my wrist.

My AD (he carries both brands) is telling me to buy the Rolex. Says he sees too many AP's come back with issues and that the 15400 is simply not as durable ?!?!?

Would love to hear some opinions especially from those who have a 15400. Need to make a call on this very quickly as both pieces just came up as available. TIA !!!

400 is fine for everyday and better than a TT GMTc for that.

It's versatile enough to wear on a daily basis. Only thing you have to worry about is the durability, the bezel is a scratch magnet.

I wear the 15400 with everything from tuxedo to jeans and a hoodie. It's the ultimate dress up dress down watch. However, I am careful not to wear it situations where it might get banged on something (Costco run, gym, pool, etc.) as it is prone to scratch.

15400 is nice and it should be ok with care but it is not as robust as a Rolex and it might require the odd trip to Clearwater now and then for the odd issue. AP service is first rate though.

For a worry free beater, I'd pick the GMT.

No issues with any of the APs I've owned and have a blue 15400 but will say I wouldnt daily them personally. Just too finely finished vs the Rolexes.

I daily a Sub. APs for weekends.

Had issues with my 3120 Fc diver after a year plus even tho it was not a daily beater. No issues with my SubC after 2+ years even tho its a daily beater.

Having said that, i stil went ahead and bought a RO :)

A black dial 15400 is a great daily wearer. If I would have gotten a black dial instead of silver I'd still have it - got a Diver instead.

The Rolex is a workhorse. That's it - common and will take a lickin and keep tickin.

The AP finish is on another level and looks are so different.

I think everyone should own a Rolex in their collection for the durability not the exclusivity.

I have been wearing my 15202 as my daily for the last 2 weeks- I know that is a very short time but before I got this, my Daytona was my daily watch and I have to say that the PCL on the Daytona scratched much easier. I have not noticed any obvious scratches on my 15202 yet and am in short sleeves exclusively.
The 15400 seemed more robust than 15202 and should be able to handle being worn daily- I do sit in an office 90% of the time.
You cannot go wrong either way and congrats in advance!

There's a big difference between 400 and 202. The 202 is so much slimmer that it's less likely to get scratched. Most of my larger watches are evidence to this observation while my slimmer pieces are cleaner.

The AP is on my radar, but I have a GMTII. Tough call.

For a daily beater, the TT GMTIIC. Then you are still gonna want the AP and get it year after. Lool.

Although the 15400 can be worn on every occasion (I've been daily wearing my Jumbo since I got it a month ago), the GMT is more versatile, IMO.

Please get the 15400.. I have one and wear it everyday..who cares if it scratches...? Isn't that the point of wearing it ?? There are enough Rolexes out there....distinguish yourself ....

+1 I've had mine since January and wear it 80% of the time. I am more careful wearing it than my other watches, but it goes great with shorts to a suit and yes, it is something different from the herd. Love mine.

He is actually telling you the truth. AP Bezel is scratch magnet.

rolex submariner is a daily wearer. tried and tested.

Whilst the 15400 may technically be a bit more fragile than a Rolex I'm a believer that all watches can be worn daily, if I was in your shoes I'd go with the AP (although the TT GMT is a very nice watch as well).

Perhaps you could try both and really see which one you prefer, as far as I'm concerned it's the best way to go.

I flip between a 15400, GMT, and LVC daily. The AP can no doubt be a daily wearer...I wear mine most often in a tee shirt, shorts, and flip flops but it looks great dressed up. Pretty durable IMO but I'm not really putting it to the test. Since you already have an AP and a Portuguese, I'd go with the Rolex. It would make for a great trio.
