What should my budget be for next watch
Hello All,
Sorry for asking this silly question, but I would really like to hear your opinions. Has anyone worked out a formula as to how much you should spend on a watch? I am sure you have to consider salary, job security, expenses, savings, when was the last time you bought one and when will be next time I plan to buy one, and ultimately how much you love the watch you are considering...right? I have been gifted my first 2 watches, and I am finally financially ready to buy my first...but with the wife, mortgage, and baby...I feel bad spending even 1% of my net worth on one. Someone please help me out with any advice or formula's you've worked out, thanks in advance. |

I believe the formula for a married man with child and mortgage is something like this...
Amount of watch = SQRoot (what wife says * what wife says) / 1 |

Any position taken should first be discussed with your Lady(Wife)...as she is your partner. Oh...and there is no pattern or formula to follow it either is or isn't......

Depends on the number of things, but in general if you have to ask, you may want to wait a bit.
1% on a watch is nothing when you compared how much $ you lose when you drive a brand new car off a dealer's lot or the costs associated with raising a child. The thing you have to remember that it is just money. Live a little. Live responsibly. |

I made sure that all my other obligations were free and clear before I even decided to buy fancy watches. As Buffet says, invest what you're willing to lose. Whatever that number is, is what your budget should be for a nice watch.

Welcome! I think your budget should be right around $17,655. Lots of interesting pieces to choose from.

I Seriously would feel bad buying a watch of any value if I didn't have at least at 7 months of house payments under my mattress and not have started an account for my child.
Sorry, I'm such a buzz kill Sent -3 or -7

If you are financially ready then you know what you have, just don't spend more than that and try and buy something that will hold its value and be easy to sell. A sub is always a good start, a second hand one can be just as enjoyable as a new one.

This is one of the most puzzling threads ever, and there are some strange ones.
If you have money in the bank and do not need anything else buy a watch. Do you have a formula for what you spend on groceries/clothes/eating out/beer............ |

Like many thing in our lives, cars, hobbies or other non essentials , we can either justify or not based on what we want to do. I would look at your income, savings and outgoing and see where you are. Also, what is it you want to purchase. Big difference between a plat. Daytona and a SS one. You will figure it out. Keep the wife informed, don't overthink it and buy right so if it does not work you can sell and break even or not lose much. Enjoy the process.

My view has always been. Weigh it up. If you have to think you can't afford. I looked at my old man and he worked 13 hour days 6 days a week to make himself very wealthy. He never spent it and he regrets it now.
Sometimes you need to live in the moment. If looking at that watch you put on makes you smile. Can you put a price on that everyday? Be sensible but don't go over. I'd like to think if your bit asset rich and still creating wealth 10% of your income for the year. If your asset rich then it all depends. |

thank you all for your replies! as you can tell, I am new to this forum (even though I have spent a lot of time on other car forums). you all are
very stand up gentlemen. again, thank you the wife says get whatever you want. she knows I work hard and have saved up a lot. we have over 200 months of mortgage under the Matress and I promised her that if I buy this watch, I won't buy another one for the next 10 years. just in case you all are wondering what it is... |

Welcome and congrats in advance on a great new watch! I came close to getting same one myself but opted for recently discontinued RGRC. Look forward to seeing the incoming thread and wrist shot...Cheers,

Now that is a stunner. Be sure to post plenty of pics when you decide. Sounds like you can afford it, and if you just needed a little enabling...well you came to the right place.

I would get the watch, but also think about paying down your mortgage. Sounds like you are doing well.

As long as all other obligations are met your budget should be whatever it it is the watch you want costs. I believe for most people it then involves some some saving up at that point. Also, if you promise not to buy another for 10 years you will be renegotiating sooner rather than later.

I think only you can answer that question. "Value" is perceived differently by each of us. Since you plan to keep it for an extended period of time, and not flip, you are really the one determining the day-to-day value of any model you select.
Beautiful choice, that said!

Assuming most of your net worth is not consisting of equity in your primary residence and you are paying cash, why not?
Think of it as diversifying your investments. How's that for enabling??

My rule for spending of luxury item is 10% of your extra money.
Extra means net excess cash after all expenses for the year. Sounds tough to follow but very worth it IMHO Congrats and yes, you are in the wrong forum dude Great choice! |
