Icon20 To "date" or not to date.

How important is the date function?
I prefer strongly a date, I often say "no date no deal".

Wow, you're brave. This is one of the first threads that I ever started here at TRF back when I first joined up & I got torn to shreds & humiliated for pages by some of the regulars for starting such a lame, done to death post.

I prefer no date in most cases. Love the clean look.

For me, it would depend on what I already had in a collection...I love having a date on my watch but also appreciate how simple and beautiful a dial can be without one. Sometimes, less is more but not always.

I voted Date as most of mine have it , but it really depends on the watch for me.
Doesn't get much better than a nice clean no date Sub or Explorer.

I absolutely love the look of some models without the date, but for an everyday watch I just prefer it. Even though I can just glance at my phone I normally don't, I look at my wrist.

With the exception of the time, the date is the only feature I use just about every day. I have to have a date on all my watches.

A piece doesn't have to have a date for me to like it and if I like it, then I buy it and wear it.

If a piece I like has a date, then I buy it and wear it and I have the advantage of the date complication.

The thing is that whereas I got spoiled by having the date on the watches I owned for 35 years, when I bought my Explorer, I found that I didn't really need a date on my watch.

The weird part is that when I bought my Explorer, it didn't really occur to me that there was no date until later and when I did realize it, I didn't care.

Then I bought my DJ and while the date was handy, the date was not the feature that drew me to it so much. It was the dial and the Super Jubilee bracelet that made it so appealing.

So, there is no blanket answer for me. My 14060M is the watch I wear the most and it doesn't have a date and nothing could ever make me exchange it for a 116610.

As far as I'm concerned, Submariners don't have dates. Explorers don't have dates. DJs have dates. GMTs have dates and that's the natural order of things.

For some reason I have to have the date on a Rolex, yet with other brands (such as Panerai) I can happily live without it

I used to feel like I needed the date on my watch. Then I bought the Daytona, and I haven't missed it nearly as much as I thought I would.

During the three months it has been my daily, there has only been two occasions where I couldn't remember the date and had to do the minor inconvenience of pulling my phone out of my pocket to check.
