Icon5 SS: Daytona vs BLNR GMT

So many threads about the bruiser or blue-black gmt have me thinking...would a gmt be more 'useful' than a Daytona? Ok, let me re-phrase. If you have access to both pieces (forget the grail concept of the SS Daytona) which way would you go? Honestly. (Say SS Daytona was not hard to get at all)

Deep inside you know you want Daytona so now it's time to get it.

SS: Daytona vs BLNR GMT

Like them both Mr G, but I have to say I tend to reach more for my gmt than I do my Daytona.

They are both exceptional. I would lean towards the BLNR based on your travel, as mentioned already.

Both are beautiful but I think the GMT's buzz is going to die down a little very soon... The Daytona is the King here and too special not to get.

Since you travel often, I'd recommend the GMT...my personal preference though would be the Daytona. It would go great with your Sub

BLNR. I used to travel quite a bit and the date function and GMT were a must.

White faced Daytona is HOT!!! (so is the BLNR, but the edge for me goes to the white faced Daytona!).

I purchased a white Daytona SS for my father and a BLNR for myself.
Here is how I classify the watches:
For Compliments: Daytona
For Date Function: BLNR
For GMT Function: BLNR
For travel: BLNR
For a splash of color: BLNR
For a more slender fit when wearing a dress shirt: Daytona

I just got the BLNR yesterday in fact and I am wearing it instead of my DateJust II.
I do like the functionality of the watch and I like that it isn't as flashy.

However, if I was to pick one Rolex, I'd say go for the Daytona.

You clearly want the Daytona since you asked "daytona or the BLNR" and not "BLNR or Daytona".

I'll make this very easy for all. Remember when the black SS GMT2c came out in 2007 how "hot"it was! fast forward a few years later, you can get 1000$ off a BNIB any day and a used for 1800-2000$ less in the gray market! same thing with the BLNR, its the hot kid in the block that will gradually lose its sparkle! Daytona, after 14 year of redesign in year 2000 still a timeless classic. The bling and glare with BLNR is a contemprary hype! it is a great watch but not timeless with this disco club bezel!( i know I will be hit hard for my comment ;)

This is how I feel also

But in your case the traveling gives the nod to the GMT if you were a racing enthusiast well then Daytona

If backgrounds and needs were not considered and the Daytona and GMT were both sitting there side by side and someone said hey fella which watch would you visually prefer I am a Daytona man

As we all say ya can't go wrong with either

But the BLNR is not an ordinary GMTc. It is the first in the GMT line with a Black-Blue bezel and first for any watch company to manufacture a two tone ceramic bezel. Rolex has exclusive patents on this process so their is that added exclusivity to this model.

Having said that, I definitely am for all the history in the Daytona and that watch will be in my collection for sure (once they refresh it).

BLNR...I'm biased, of course.
I work in a different time zone (GMT -6) from my home (GMT -5), and my wife's family live in a different time zone (GMT -11)...so it's a perfect choice for me.
I also think the BLNR is a modern classic and will stay that way, big supply or not.
Finally, I"m not much of a race fan, and need reading glasses to see the little chronographs...that said, I'm a HUGE Steve McQueen fan!

Congrats either way,

S.

Can't disagree with your point my friend either. They are all Rolexes and the rest is us analyzing and conversing :) :)

This is a tough one. Both are great watches for different reasons. I own both of them, but the BLNR is new to me. Have just had it for less than a month. At this point, I would lean more towards the BLNR as I feel it is a more well rounded watch. In the end you can't go wrong with either one.

If it was not the BLNR, just the GMT II, than Daytona. But the BLNR is very attractive.... So the BLNR - but based on all the assumptions mentioned.

Pretty sure we have debunked the SS Daytona being hard to get, at least in the US of A. That said, gmt is useful if you need to track multiple time zones and the Daytona is useful if you like to time everything because of OCD

I cannot stand the size of the daytona. GMT is an all around winner

You can always get a GMT whenever you want (it was my first rolex in 1997). A SS Daytona is a bit more difficult (BNIB from an AD) to obtain usually. So if presented with the opportunity to get one or the other I would go Daytona first notwithstanding the GMT is significantly more useful.

The BLNR gets the nod! The date function gets more use than the chrono function for me!

GMT is a great watch but in my opinion Daytona is unbeatable. It's pure class and pure sport, it has so much presence on the wrist (7" wrist here).

Good luck in your choice.

Wow! Very interesting comments from everyone. Looks like Daytona remains a classic and grail-esque, but GMT has a very special place. Poll results are quite interesting as of today.
