My first rolex: Sea Dweller 1665
I'm a new member and find this to be a great forum. I acquired my first Rolex last year. Paid $1000 and additional $970 at Rolex for repairs. It is a Sea Dweller 1665, SN 8056###. Due to previous owner I had to have repaired: new bezel, new hands, new winding crown, new case tube, new end piece, new second hand. I have no box or original papers. In my recent research through this and other forums, I feel that this could be a collectable watch and I got a really good deal on it. I wear this watch everyday. I Love it. I figure that year is 1983 to 1984. I am curious if anyone knows last production year of the 1665. Also I would appreciate an estimate of value.

How is it that bronco was able to have his 1665 serviced by a RCS with no trouble but I am being treated like I'm from Pluto? It was only in March of last year that this was posted so I suppose it could have been a year before 08' that he had it serviced.

That was wayyyyy back when I was still talking with RSC. I have had it serviced by NYC RSC since then. BTW, I don't know too much about these White SD 2000's so maybe the casebacks were different for them.

I think it depends where you take it. Maybe you are going to New York but you might do better at Dallas. Beverley Hills was very accommodating until they closed down earlier this year.

I was shot down in Dallas. I had it done there in 95'. I was told by NY they didn't want to deal with the problem of parts not being replaceable, fragility of older dials, and of potential damage during service. I told them I was totally confident in their ability to service it and wouldn't hold them responsible for the dial. If I do somehow get them to service the watch, I don't think they would want me telling everybody about it. I may have to swear an oath of secrecy.

Sea Dweller 1665
Hi Bronco,
I was browsing the Rolex sites and found your post in this forum. Congrats on such a nice piece! I have the exact same one as yours. a 1665 with serial 80xxxxxx. I bought the watch in 1984 in a duty free shop in Hong Kong. I was 24 years old and I bought it because I did a lot of fishing and diving. This was a lot of money for me back then. It was worth it. I am from Hawaii but reside in No. VA. USA. I only wear this watch very occassionally, maybe once or twice a year. I have never serviced this watch since new and it keeps accurate time even today. It boggles my mind that a watch can last this long!! The only thing that went bad was the band link below the six o'clock. The link was replaced by an authorized Rolex dealer in Ballston, VA. I do have a sweep hand corrosion but still in good shape. As you can imagine, I paid about $1,250.00 back in '84. It's probably worth more by now but I would not sell this piece. I have very fond memories of this watch. Enjoy your watch! |

valing, your watch is worth a lot lot more now.
However, it is definitely worth getting it serviced as the oils in the movement will have degraded over the years. Make sure you keep the original dial and hands, but take it to a Rolex watchmaker and get it serviced is essential. This watch should last several lifetimes or more if you keep it properly maintained.

Thanks for the advise.
Come to think of it, it was serviced when I had the band link replaced. That was about 10 years ago. I will take it in for servicing and sweep hand replacement. |

hi Bronco and Valing,
kudos to both of you on ur SDs. Just curious if you have noticed on the casebacks. is the world "PATENTED" on the inside of the case back been etched out. I saw a piece on the online auctions with it being etched out. I was wondering if these are common for most of the last SDs made in 83 and 84 as i'm planing to buy this piece. thanks in advance, http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=113810 |

Caseback
Interesting. This caseback isn't listed as one of the three known types of casebacks on the DRSD website. It is missing the word "Patent" engraving on the "Big Oyster" caseback. The only version I didn't list an example of is the Patent Pending caseback.
